This may seem a bit esoteric but does anyone know who make the bolts for Wheel Horse.    There are about 3 different logos on bolt heads I can think of offhand but I have no idea who the manufacturers were. Does anybody know?

Having been on RS for many years now and seeing how "frugal" the Pond family was, my guess is whatever brand you could get the most pieces for the price!

Not a bad thing, just conservative!

I thought those symbols represent the grade.

One thing for sure, that old hardware is MUCH better than today's. I can remove every single bolt and nut from a 1960s tractor without breaking or striping one, yet try that on a 10 year old anything and half of them will be striped or broken off

Where ever In can, stainless hardware. Always Never-Seez. :handgestures-thumbupright:

Fastenal, good source. Lowes too.

If there are any markings on the head besides the grade markings it is the manufacturer's ID. Grade markings are the 3 or 6 marks. I worked in that segment

of manufacturing for a little over 45 years. All bolts must have the manufacturers ID on them and it is registered with government, so it is traceable in case of

failure or whatever. I know in the collector car circle they try to make a lot out of that and it may vary depending on the location of the plants. Who is closer

and so on.

When redoing a tractor I often buy from Bolt Depot using the Wheel Horse parts list as a guide.

Everything comes packaged by size and labeled.  Been buying from them for six or seven years and they are are high quality.

They have an excellent two page fastener guide.

Oliver 2-44  :   This is what Fastenal Engineering says about   18.8 vs  316 stainless steel fasteners

 | Fastenal

The 316 stainless steels have 2-3% molybdenum added while the 18-8 series stainless steels do not. While it has comparable strength characteristics, 316 and 316L stainless steel have a higher degree ofcorrosion resistance due to the addition of the element molybdenum.

Sorry guys but it was not Millers Falls. It was Midwest Fasteners. That much I know but who were the other suppliers?
