John Frederick 0 #1 Posted July 19, 2018 I have a 416-8 Wheel Horse with an Onan Performer 16 engine. I've had it since new, purchased in 1990 +-. It recently back fired and just quit. I am trying to figure out if it is fatally wounded or can be saved. Plan on a compression and leak down test as a first step in my plan to save it. Question is how much compression is needed for the engine to be functional and what would be the guidelines for a leak down test. Thanks ! Great site. lynnmor 6,707 #2 Posted July 19, 2018 If you have at least 75 psi, the engine should run. After that check, I would see if the flywheel key may have sheared when it backfired.
WVHillbilly520H 10,369 #3 Posted July 19, 2018 When it backfired and just quit were you mowing? And does it start back up? The reason I ask as when my ignition module went that's how it acted till I replaced then, Jeff.
John Frederick 0 #4 Posted July 19, 2018 Thanks lynnmoor and hillbilly proud - Actually not under load at the time. For some reason (SWAG) I feel the need to check inside the engine. What would be your first step ? Thanks.
