312-H (Eaton 1100) Hard to Shift Out of Reverse

Recommended Posts

Good morning everyone!

I had my 312H out for the first time this past weekend and the more I drove it, the harder it was to get out of reverse. I added about a quart of oil before I started (was just barely on the dip stick before) and as I mowed, it got harder and harder to come out of reverse. If I barely put it in reverse (where I was moving slow) I could shift it out. But if I pulled the joy stick all the way back where I was moving quickly, I would have to either hit the brake, or slam it in forward in order to get it out of reverse.  I am beginning to think it was linkage related, like maybe something is getting stuck when I put it all the way in reverse. Anyone had a similar issue? What is the fix?

Just a follow up on this incase anyone has a similar issue.

I sprayed the linkage down with PB Blaster and other lube and that fixed the issue. Pretty simple.

To expand a bit more, here you go. I couldn't find anything wrong visually when looking at the linkage, however, thinking again about the symptoms which were:

1. Less stuck in reverse when I eased the control lever in reverse (slow speed)

2. Really stuck in reverse when I jammed the lever into reverse (fast speed)

I kind of figured maybe the linkage was more dirty in the more extreme positions which were used less. So cleaning and lubing everything really helped. I will probably change the filter this fall and try to clean everything a bit better and get it slicked up real nice. Not sure if it supposed to be lubed or not.

I have always heard that dry graphite is supposed to be used on the linkage.

Can I change the hoses on my GT1800 without draining the transmission?  Thanks.

I have a GT1800 that I have swapped an M14 into.  The original drive belt is too long for the Kohler.  I tried a 7473 belt and that was too long.  I'm guessing I need an 81" belt.  Does anyone know for sure?  I'm thinking it should be the same length as a 314H?   I'm trying to avoid multiple trips to TSC with the price of gas.  Yes, I do have the correct hydro pulley on the Kohler.  Thanks.

I wanted a pedal control for my recently acquired GT1800.  This is what I came up with.  It still needs some finishing and I may rework the foot pedal.  It's basically bolt on other than drilling a 7/8" hole in the belt cover.  I'm also considering building an automatic neutral return if I can find the right torsion spring.  I would appreciate any input and advice.

I've got an Eaton 1100 in a GT 1800.  I noticed that it pushes quite easily after it had been sitting and not running for awhile.  The manual says the transmission should lock up when pushed, but this one doesn't.  I've had it running and it does move okay.  It will lock up if you try to push it right after you shut it off?  It hasn't been running in a month, and now it pushes easily.  Is this normal or do I have a problem?

Does anyone have a part number or source for the plastic washer that goes between the hub and transmission housing on the Eaton 1100's.  Can't seem to find a part number in the diagrams.  Thanks. Bill
