1961 H55D ignition help

Recommended Posts

Bucko

Very new here, and to a Wheel Horse. I'm helping a friend getting his 1961 Wheel Horse running. We have fuel, but no spark. In removing the flywheel, it appears we are missing the coil/magneto that provides the spark. In the picture attached, the coil/magneto at the right is missing. Does this coil/magneto have the spark plug wire that attaches to the spark plug? The coils to the left connect to a circuit board marked "GEN", and I suspect these are for charging the battery. The starter works (spins the flywheel), the engine has good compression, and we are simply lacking a spark. I spent over two hours reading various posts on this forum for this setup, and I believe this coil/magneto is what we need to get spark. There is a spark plug of course, but no spark plug wire, which I assume and hope comes from this missing coil/magneto. Is it available?

This tractor has been in my friends family for over 50myears (his fathers), and we want to cut his yard with it to show it off!

I believe you are correct on your assumptions. The spark plug wire should be attached to the coil.  I doubt you can find the coil new, but an ad in our classified section may result in finding a good used one. Maybe some other member can supply you with more info on this.

The plug wire is pulled out of the coil. Look inside the little hole off to the side on the coil and you should see a little spike inside. The plug wire gets pushed down into that hole and the spike is what makes the connection. You can install a new wire if the spike is not broken. Use expoxy to hold the wire in the coil.

Also appears the contact points and condenser are missing. They go inside the little box.

@formariz Caz may have some pictures and or part numbers.

You are correct about the charging coils

While you have the flywheel off you would be well advised to replace the points and condenser. This manual should be helpful.

Attached you will find the parts list for that magneto. Parts for it are not always easy to find. What you need is the one in the first  link provided. Don't wait too long . This individual has quite a few but this is not normal. I suggest getting more than one if you decide to keep that engine. Also the condenser and points are not always easy to find. Another good substitute for the 28516 condenser is #29559 a little more common. It is a good idea to get very familiar with the entire electrical system on that engine if you are planning to keep it. It is a bit odd compared to others and many have been ruined by not understanding it. Also get familiar with the timing procedure on it. Very finicky in that department.

This pic was one I found and copied to describe what I was looking for. I do have the points, and they are good, without any pitting or burs. I can't say though if the condenser is any good though, and will replace it for good measure.

This is a great site! Very helpful folks here. A thousand thanks for all the help/ I thought I was pretty good and knew my way around these small engines until I saw this one. A little bit of reading and studying, and its not all that difficult to figure out.

Perfect! Glad to see you have the courage to get that old girl going again.

Sorry for over stating the obvious but assumed that was a pic of your engine.

No apologies needed! I appretiated the response and help. I enjoy a good challenge. I'm very supprised in how well preserved this tractor and its engine is. It would be a crime not to get it running again. Just the look on the neighbors faces when they see it running will be a hoot!
