Dirty carb or fuel pump?

Recommended Posts

Tgtack

WH857 with K181. Started running crappy while mowing and got to where would barely run with choke full out. Tank is clean and new fuel lines on it. Pulled carb and soaking in cleaner, but beginning to wonder if fuel pump is failing. There was barely any fuel in bowl when I flipped it to drain it. What are signs of a failing pump or suggestions?

pull off the pump 2 bolts, pop off the 4 screws and give it a cleaning with some carb cleaner, can't hurt make sure it's not gummed up and the spring isn't stuck.

Pull the line going to the carb and crank the motor to see if the fuel is pumping out. If you got fuel make the float is set right and make sure the jet is not plugged up. Set the high speed set screw.

Yes, just crank the engine with the carb fuel line off. It should spurt a good stream of fuel.  Hold the line in a can to catch the fuel.

Were the two carb bolts tight and the gasket good  when you took the carb off ?  Excess air being sucked in around the flange or the throttle plate shaft can cause the problem.

If the poor performance exists after you check the pump output, clean the carb, set the high and low speed screws and set the float,  with the engine running, spray WD-40 around the carb  flange and throttle shaft.  If the rpm changes, it is sucking air

Carb is soaking overnight, will check the pump output in morning. Thanks.

If you have a fuel filter in the tank make sure it is not plugged.
