Oil Capacity question

Recommended Posts

paleoman

I'm kinda in a jam, Kohler manual shows that a K301 has an oil cap. of 2 qts.

But my dip stick has always shown full at 1-1/2 qts.

Just did a rebuild after 9 years and put in the full 2 qts.

ran beautiful... for a while... then just quits. hard to start.. blows smoke, back fires and then sometimes it will run very smooth for about 10 sec and quits again. same story repeats...

so, over filling oil can cause weird issues like this?

 THX folks!

 Mark

my 1979 c-101 with shaker mount holds 1 and 1/2 qt. I just changed it if that helps.

The C-101 has a K-241AS and uses 1-1/2 qts. Your engine probably has an embossed number "K-301" on it because both engines use the same block. The "AS" designation means the oil pan was designed to fit into the shaker cradle, and it's a bit smaller than a normal K-241 or K-301 with the large pan.

:WRS:          The symptoms you have listed are consistent with low carburetor float adjustment or ignition points out of adjustment. I would begin by doing a static timing which is the most accurate way to set points gap.

Thanks everyone for your help!

The issue was certainly oil level. The plug oil fowled.

1-1/2 Qts is correct. Thanks again everyone for your help!

 God bless!
