Jeff Wondsel 0 #1 Posted April 9, 2018 I have a Model #1-4851 riding mower. I don't have a manual, but my question is this. The engine will run itself when the battery is disconnected, but is not charging the battery when it is. What could it be? Thanks Jeff
pfrederi 17,027 #2 Posted April 9, 2018 (edited) I can't find a listing for the KV181s-37116b that should be on your Commando V8 but I believe it has a breakerless igntion system. That runs with out any battery input. Sounds like you regulator or stator/charging coil has failed. I am not familiar with the V8s does it have big finned regulator like this?? If so run a jumper wire from one of teh fins to the batter (-) terminal and see if it charges then (Should have about 14 volts with engine running) Edited April 9, 2018 by pfrederi
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,440 #3 Posted April 9, 2018 I believe the engine would be a Tecumseh VH80-148001 Click on the pictures Garry
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,440 #4 Posted April 9, 2018 A service bulletin that listed the engine usage for 1969 and 1970 was combined. I spent a lot of time sorting that mess out and believe that is what Toro used for their files. 1969 used a Kohler engine and 1970 used Tecumseh. Hope I have it correct. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,440 #6 Posted April 9, 2018 Now you have me wondering if the service bulletin is correct. Hopefully Jeff will straighten us out. I see I made a note that the two different tractor models used the two different engines which makes sense for a model change. Wish I recorded why I did that.
