I should have taken a picture of a fuel pump I rebuilt a few years back, the stuff in it was thick and looked like shoe goo. After soaking in lacquer cleaner over night it was floating on the surface, didn't even dissolve! Have no idea what it was but the steel tube to the carburetor was half full of it too.

While products like Sea Foam have their place, I find disassembly is the only long term fix.  Dissolving that mess with snake oil, and sending it thru whatever, is making the problem worse.

MEK is a better solvent than laquer thinner but the Berryman carb cleaning buckets are better than the Gunk brand, I'm wondering if a sonic cleaner like jewelers use wouldn't be a good option too? and if all that is in the carb the fuel lines are usually ate up from the inside out another issue of ethanol, Jeff.

I looks like someone was using that carb as a urinal. (I think they left the cake holders in there too)!

MEK is a bit too nasty on gaskets and particularly any rubber or synthetic rubber parts if your soaking the whole carb without complete disassembly. Berrymans or NAPA carb soak works best if you give it time.
