I picked this up at a flea market yesterday. The man I bought it from didn't know what it was either but said my curiosity was worth 3 dollars.:D

I agree, might be an indicator mount for an early lathe, depends on how the bottom is shaped - almost looks like a V way...?

I believe the technical term is either

Whatzitt or freviss.

Or something else.......

I agree with Classiccat, my guess is it is some type of OLD dial indicator mount.

Dial indicator base, did you check and see if it is magnetic?

Oooooo....yeah?

Whatever it's original purposes I'm glad you bought it so we could see it.

Definitely worth 3 bucks to display.

Thanks everyone for your help. I had no clue what it was. I looked it up on line from @midpack identification. Now I know a little about what it is used for. I think I will clean it up find a rod for it and use it.

You got a great deal for sure!! If you only use it one time, it was worth it!

That's true, like @ebinmaine said it was worth 3 dollars for a conversation piece.

Eric, I knew it wasn't a thingamabobber, they only started making them in the 70's and that is obviously older than that 😂😂

I was born and raised in Athol Massachusetts. The place where Starrett tools originated so many decades ago. Always nice to see the high quality of their stuff still around.

I don't have any machinist tools or other things that they made other than a few high-quality metal rulers in different sizes. Just stuff I've picked up over the years from inheritances.

Hahahahaha!!

Well, you know, sometimes I get my unknown fine measuring tool holder years kind of mixed around. I am getting a little on the ancient side. 47 this past year you know.
