A Big Red Snapper!

Recommended Posts

WHX??

The engines were mounted with the pto end toward the front for a forward and mid pto  another shaft  off the flywheel for the drive and rear pto. . Here's a screen shot of that unique power distribution arrangement.

Capture.JPG

Hydro is a Sundstrand on Massey branded units and switched to Eatons for the Snappers. Transmission is a Peerless with a two speed axle. .Six belts in that power transmission tho!

This tractor is quite the beast, comparable to our D series. A real beefy cat 0 three point system was offered with a rear finish mower. Sadly this tractor does not have the 3 pt. :(

Did that just for you Craig!

So after checking this girl out some more it may not go on the auction block. I was thinking I got 500 I did good and would go towards the 520 that replacement (which is a smoker BTW).  At first thought the engine will run great with TLC and might be a good repo for a 520. or just fix the little things wrong (quite a few) and return it to sno duty. The Original Company cab frame has been welded on more times than should have been and is pretty much shot, canvases long gone but that's  neither here nor there. I need another project like another hole in the head tho! Parts availability might be an issue as well.

Every one should have at least one off brand in their collection Jim. That would be a nice beast to get back into shape as a user.

The decks for the 1650's had an expensive cogged drive belt between the blades. I believe this was to keep the blades in time so that they would not hit each other. I'm not sure if the 1855's had this set up on the deck or not.

Correct you are Dan. and it was a 3 bladed shaft driven 54 inch affair. Two sizes were offered in mid and rear mount.  In my research on that other tractor site that was confirmed if you can even find one. Ford had a similar timed deck once and you knew about it right away if they came out of time!

Some more interesting info.

:text-yeahthat: that one is quite unique as well!  With your great skill set Jim, and given some time to clear the shop of :wh: projects, I’m confident that you could get all the “cobbles” out of that thing and make it sharp and fully functional once again...:handgestures-thumbupright:

Then maybe I could get a little seat time or a little ski time!:banana-skier:

Jim, my opinion is keep it for the uniqueness, then whether or not the Onan would transplant to the 520, the Big Red Snapper could be a candidate for a Predator repower I'm sure Kyle @fast88pu could help you out on some performance upgrades there, and of course fix the little things and return it to fish...oh darn I mean snow duty...Jeff.

Yah thats choice Billy ..that two bottom is a bad @$$ rig....My fellow furrow dogs would like that! . you really got to see how stout that hitch is to believe it and this would be a excellent tractor or a fel project. Lots of options with all the PTOs for pump mounting and got real beefy front end built like Stormy Daniels with trailer style hubs. I'm sure a Quik Way or Ark could be mounted up. That tractor has the three spool valve on it. Mine only has the two hence the blanked off lever.

You would think so Jimbo but not real bad but now add the wheel weights and I think the tires may be loaded not sure. The blower weights a good 250 -300 and I bet the mounting bracket for the blower goes 150 so it does add up.

That is a nice one Josh will have to look for it this year, would be a real job and $$ you make mine look like that!

The good news is Cindy gave me blessing to keep it! :greetings-clappingyellow:.

I admit to being an active member at GTT also. And yes, there are quite a few folks that are on here as well as GTT,

I have on many occasions sent PM's to GTT folks to tell them about Red Square being a Wheel Horse "exclusive" forum, and I have seen some of them "stop in here" for a visit.

Whoo Hooo!! That's great news. Being that it has been in the family so long, I think that's the right decision.

Would that make it ( WHX14+ ) now? :D

:text-yeahthat:Dan—I think you meant:

WHX14:text-+1:

:ychain:

In all seriousness, that is one beast of a machine with a very intriguing PTO drive system.  It would be a fun work beast to have around, and dare I say on the :wh: forum, a fun tractor to show—mainly because of its uniqueness and rarity. If not for hobbyists like us taking in some of these “rare step children” most of them will eventually end up in the scrap heap once their current owners pass off the scene.  I like it too and look forward to seeing what Jim does with it!

Probably just fix up the little things, new fluids and fix that dang hydraulic leak. The way it leaks I could fill it and run up and down the drive way to give the black top a seal coating! It's stout enough to hook the boat up and go after @Ed Kennell's fish frys!

      Hey all!!

Its been quite some time since I’ve been able catch my breath, let alone get on here long enough to post anything.

Ive been extremely busy at work since the holiday season. (Big Box Distribution Center). Especially with everything going on currently, we’ve been working overtime and pushing production like crazy to restock the stores we service. I have, in a matter of months, worked my self to a merit position that is essentially an assistant managers position.

Personally, life has been just as hectic. My wife’s grandmother moved in with us a few weeks ago, right before the COVID 19 really hit here in the states. She’s the one that had a stroke, and there have been several other incidents that have left her unable to live alone. Today, her sister and roommate for 15 years, passed away, as she had been having health issues as well and was hospitalized herself. My grandmother had a heart attack several weeks ago that led to the discovery of four major blockages, none less than 88%. She is (thank goodness) currently home and still “Fat and sassy”. But, things have been stressful to say the least.

We found out Sunday that there was another employee in the warehouse that had tested positive. I called in last night to kinda weigh my options, as I now have two elderly, susceptible people, as well as two toddlers, in my house. A coworker texted me and told me that last night (I work 6p-6a) they were told two more had been quarantined. So, today I took a 30 day unpaid leave of absence! I’m not going to be responsible for killing my father in law or my grandmother in law.

In an attempt to keep things light hearted and happy around here, I’m treating it as a vacation. Might as well right!? Haha.

The man cub has expressed interest in working on the tractors, so this week sometime I think we might attempt to tackle the rewiring of the Charger that I abandoned in the fall.

I also started another project with the neighbor using my grandpas old Snapper. We’re going to make it into a one man Mule/Dunebuggy mobile.
This is something that’s going to be long and slow, as the plan is to salvage and repurpose as much as possible. We’ve already stripped it down and gutted it for the most part, so now we HAVE to do something with it.

For the next month or so, I should be around more. I’ve missed having the time to just sit and read and interact with you all, but I’m looking forward to hearing from you guys on my “vacation”.
Here’s some pics of where we’re at on the Snapper (NTBD) project.

we’re going to extend it out the back a bit, simply for a bit of storage. The plan is to use 40mm ammo cans as fender tool boxes. Haven’t decided how to power it yet, but was thinking about going with a chain driven set up for simplicity. We’d like to keep the handle bars and throw a twist throttle on it.
Of course this could all change over the course of the build 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

      @pullstart

So, my FIL picked up a pretty good looking snapper for 30 bucks.... guy said it needed carb work. Turned out it needed a new recoil start too, no big deal. Well the carbs on, got the pull start on. Got a few (3, maybe 4) starts out of it.

Starting with the second start, the shroud (which the recoil housing screws to) started pulling loose. This would mean that I had to loosen, replace, then tighten it each time. This is because the bolts that keep the shroud in place do so by having a washer type head on the bolt hold down little plastic tabs. Apparently these tabs wear down over time, who’d have thunk that metal running plastic would wear it down? 🤯

Go to start it today’s making sure everything’s nice and tight. Shroud pulls loose with a metallic clang. One of  the hole for the mount (that’s what I’m calling it) broke. This is part of the block, and the only way to secure the shroud.  There are two on each side of the engine. As o go to pull the shroud off, I see the pawls for the recoil start fall. My recoil start that got here Tuesday, has broken. 🤬

I take usable pieces off the old one (only problem was the spring) and replace. As I’m securing the shroud, again, the other mount on the same side breaks. They were part of the aluminum block.

Why you would have the recoil starts only point of contact with the machine be a piece of plastic, is beyond me. Why you would design the shroud to attach in such a poor way, is beyond me.

How to fix this and make it usable, without buying a new engine, is also beyond me.

Has anyone had this happen, and how did you fix it if you did?
