314 hydro, oil leak / filler cap

Recommended Posts

JERSEYHAWG / Glenn

Ok, a friend of mine just got a 314 hydro, Kohler engine. When he used it, he noticed the oil fill cap came off, besides the pressure coming out, oil shoots out to. He can't keep the cap on, when it's running, the cap pops off, oil sprays out. He temporarily duct taped it on to the fill neck. He asked me to post this here for help.

Does anyone have a clue on what's going on here and how to resolve this?

When he gets home from work he will forward a picture of the tag under the seat so we will know the year and such.

Tanks, Glenn

Make sure the air cleaner is assembled correctly and or isn’t clogged .

Jeff, it has a new assembly with new filters, he was wondering if maybe the extreme cold we had here, might have had something to do with it. I will go over his house tomorrow and look at it with him. Thanks for the reply.

If it has been operated for short periods and is below freezing it may be condensation frozen in the CC Breather.

If he just got it, could be the PO assembled the breather incorrectly.  Clean the breather, but don't assume it was assembled correctly.

Can we get a link to this breather assembly, I am looking but not having luck yet. Pete is handy on mechanics, but it could be wrong. Thanks, you gave good starting points to look for tomorrow.

I forgot, what year is this according to the serial number....a 1986??

Sorry Jeff, I didn't see your post.

Glenn, If the breather is OK, I would look at the exhaust valve guide.  If it is leaking, it could  be pressurizing the crankcase on the exhaust stroke.

That style dipstick has an o-ring on the top of the tube.  Try checking that and the cap where it slides over the tube.  The o-ring might be worn out or broken or the cap on the dipstick might be cracked.  If its loose, the pressure when it's running will make it pop off and spray oil everywhere.  Ran into that a couple times on the newer Commands at work where it was hard to push the cap down all the way so it would seal and after a few minutes running would pop loose.                             Stewart

A compression check and a cylinder leakdown test of the cylinder might help.

The dipstick should snap into place.  At work, we use the same tractor for sidewalk duty and if it is not snapped into place, oil will blow everywhere.

Yes that O ring on the top of the dipstick needs to be in place for the stick to "lock" down.   Otherwise you can blow oil out the top of the loose tube!

Ok, we have dual winners, the o ring seemed not to be seating properly. And the breather was moist / freezing up. Seems the assembly was a bit off. But what wasn't helping was the fact of one headight and headlight trim ring was missing. Letting snow, bitter cold air right in. He ordered the trim ring, I couldn't believe 40 bucks, and will get headlight. Everything back together. Test run showed no dipstick pop out or flooding oil

THANKS FOR THE HELP FELLAS.
