Rayp 15 #1 Posted October 13, 2017 I saw on U Tube that when rebuilding an engine you must leave the engine unpainted where the coil, condenser and starter are bolted to ensure the negative earth is maintained. I have done this, but I did paint the clips for these items, prior to reading this and wondered whether I now have to strip the paint from the clips before reassembling. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,478 #2 Posted October 13, 2017 Metal to metal contact around the bolts and screws that mount the objects to the engine block and chassis metal must be maintained. Spring clips don't carry electrical current so they will be OK painted. Garry
Rayp 15 #3 Posted October 13, 2017 Thank you Garry - that will save me removing the paint from inside the clips - a job I was not looking forward to! Ray
953 nut 51,463 #4 Posted October 13, 2017 On items like a coil or condenser that don't carry high amperage you can use star washers to ensure a good ground. It will penetrate the paint. 6
