Converting "brakerless ign" to "braker ign" Question

Recommended Posts

Restoring a Charger 12 with a breakerless ignition to breaker ignition.  My theory is .....its only a matter of time before it goes bad so change it now while everything is apart.

The question:  There are three wires coming from the stator.  Two go to the rectifier and one goes to the breakerless coil.

What would be the proper way do do away with the third wire?  Just cut it off? or ???  The book doesn't mention conversions.

Thanks

Bob

Do not cut the wire!  Simply disconnect the wire from the "trigger" and tape it up. Someone in the future may want to go back to "original".

BTW, a good used trigger sells for around $100. Just sayin'.

That is a ten amp charging system and the ignition system uses some of the stator, don't remember voltage. I reworked one of my engines and eliminated the breakerless system, and have parts to change over to fifteen amp on the shelf with the engine (flywheel, stator & rectifier). It will be changed over when the engine is put into service. Sometimes I get a hairbrained idea to do something where I might need the extra power. (I like to play in the snow sometimes in the dark & I want  to know it will go if sits & gets cold also).

Yep.  It does snow and get cold in Pekin

Agree do not cut the wire merely insulate it.  The coil and trigger can get you money. List them here for example  10 amp systems worked for years.  If you really want to play at night extensively use the proceeds from the trigger /coil to replace head lights with LEDS

Interesting idea. The trigger is fine but the tab on the coil came apart in my hand when I was taken it off. Not sure how the had it together but there was a small piece of bailing wire involved.

You guys got me thinking (always a dangerous thing). I just happen to have a 74 C120 that I bought for parts. Took some tools out to the backyard today and now I have a 15 amp stator and the correct flywheel and rectifier all blasted/cleaned and painted that will get installed as soon as everything dries :D

Hi I recently got an old charger 12 that had been sitting in a friends backyard for at least 20 years. The engine spins over and the starter works but it has no spark, I’ve been looking online for some solutions but I can’t seem to find any other charger 12s with my ignition setup. It seems to have a sort CDI box but I’m not sure. Does anybody know how this works or any tips on how to test for where the problem is ?

      Hello gentleman,

Problem: will not crank on its own, will crank with jump box—but still not fire

Recent things I did prior to this issue: cleaned fuel filter, replaced battery cables, replaced cable from ignition to starter

I have my test light out and am probing around.

There is no power at ignition/magneto wire or the ignition/starter wire

      There is power everywhere else

Picked up a charger 12 at auction yesterday. Put a battery, new fuel lines and a new spark pug in and it fired right up. Hydro seems to work pretty well, lever needs some adjustments but other wise it seems okay. I would like to put fresh transmission fluid in and a new filter on yet and then it should be good to go. I'm gonna start using this for plowing instead of my 753, i tried it out today and it seemed to work pretty well. The paint on the fenders and hood is a little off but it wont be hard to fix that.

It acts like the lever has limited travel and doesn't go far enough to go into reverse.  Something binding?  Bent?
The tractor showed signs that it had a rollover sometime in its life. Right front axle was welded along with some of the steering parts.
I have a 68 charger (for parts) and swapped out the repaired parts with it.
Possibily bent something there or the friction assy?????
