1987 Wheel Horse

Recommended Posts

I am considering buying a 1987 416-8 and would like to check it out this weekend.  It's a hour drive for me and wanted to check with the group if there are any know issues with a 1987 416-8?  Good reputation or Bad?  Owner mentioned it needs a new starter.  Otherwise used it until this Spring.  Does come with a plow, grader blade, 42" deck and cart for 750.  Any thoughts appreciated!

1987 416-8 has a single cylinder M16 Kohler engine. Posting this because I can never remember when they used a twin cylinder Onan and sure others do the same.

I would prefer to have the Kohler.

I am not aware of any inherent problems with the M engines although I prefer the Ks and the 8 speeds are nearly bullet proof.

It is impossible to evaluate a unit w/o pictures,  but if I could not see it run and drive, I would be very cautious.

It does have some nice implements if they are in good condition.

plow/ dozer sell for $120 $150

Grader $ 200

42" deck  $250

Wheel horse cart   $150

May be an OK deal, but I have a problem paying $750 for a non-runner.

I have an 85 and an 88 416-8 and I love both of these machines. The 87 will have the Kohler Magnum engine...I believe the Onan was first installed in 89. I prefer the Kohlers as well. These are strong and reliable machines. I have had no major issues with either 416. I've only had to deal with some relatively simple electrical issues relating to loose wires and a bad safety switch. Otherwise just routine maintenance. I would buy it at that price with those attachments...doesn't hurt to haggle down the price though. I think the attachments are worth nearly what he is asking for.

I have a '88 416-8, which has the M16 Kohler.  It has over 3600 hours on this machine, and it still runs good.  The M16 Kohlers are great engines, and as mentioned, the 8 speed transmissions are bullet proof.

Drewd--GhostRider is a 314-8 and I love it!  It is smooth running and is a powerful torquey machine.

That 416 is like a bigger engined brother.  The guys on here recommended that I buy it some years ago and I don't regret it!  With all those attachments, I don't think you can go wrong, unless it doesn't run.  Then you need to give it some thought. Sometimes it is a simple fix. Other times, an expensive and challenging problem.  Good luck, and remember :wwp:

Yes I did!  The tractor has some issues for sure.  The 42" deck is solid with free movement and decent blades. The belt covers are not great but the important bits are good.  Cannot read the deck tag as it has been painted and partially torn.   Both the grader blade and plow/dozer are in quite good shape.  I did not take the trailer as it was a small aftermarket one in not so good shape and would have had trouble loading all pieces.  The price ended up at 550.00 so felt I could take the gamble on the tractor. The wheels are really rotted but all rims looked great as well as front tie rods.  Seat is nice so think it was replaced as it looks like the tractor had lots of time out in the elements.  First job is to check out the starter and engine (engine looks good but we shall see!.  Worse case is I have some great parts!!!

PS: The hand written info I got with it has it's number as 05-422201  02 or 05-42SS01  02.  Does this make sense to anyone?  I would like to download a manual and parts list.

Thanks!

There is a 05-42SS01 and 05-42SS02 but it fits the 244-5 and 244-H lawn tractors with a vertical engine crankshaft.

There is 05-42MS01 and 05-42MS02 42" width of cut side discharge decks that fit an older version of your tractor.

You can download the file from here but also click on these lines for more info

Thanks gwest!  The mower is very much like the C-series in the download.  I'll know more as I pull it apart.  Thanks all!

Here are two pictures of the mower. What model number do you think it may be?  It looks the C series that Garry sent but just want to double check so I have the closes download possible to work on it.  The deck is sold just really dirty. The oil is where I hit all the bolts to begin the process.  The belt shields are not great as there were only 1 or 2 screws on each and cracked from rattling around.  Otherwise, I think it will clean up well.

Thanks, Drew

Afternoon gentlemen friend of mine's father passed after a long illness, and he is now the owner of his Wheel Horse 416-8 with the Onan P216.  He wants to sell it to me as he has other tractors. I never owned and Onan Machine what advice can you give me. It has been in storage for 5 years and of course according to him "ran when parked" Has 365 hours on it. Thanks in advance going to look at it this Wednesday.

Inexpensive - Carlisle X Trac ATV Bias Tire - 16x6.50-8 Good quality (I expect) Should look nice with my large rear aggies
I don't know how much these have been discounted, but I expect anything you find like this from a good brand will be 2X to 3X the price. $45 each at Amazon. This tire is discontinued.

Rough measurement seems they are about 16" tall and the lugs are about 1/2" deep.

      416-8 with Onan P216 Engine
      The good:
      *576 hours
      *Nice, clean deck (42”)
      *Nice Plow
      *Wheel Weights
      *Chains
*2nd owner. 1st owner sold the house in 2020 and said he was getting too old so he included it with the house.
*Original receipts and paperwork and manuals.
*Receipt showing tune-up and changing from the deck to the plow in November 2021
      The bad:
*The last time it was used was the winter of ‘21/‘22. It is currently set up with the plow.
*Had trouble starting, when it started, it died after 4-5 seconds. He had a portable charger and it helped. We got it running, but when I turned it down to idle, it died.
*I didn’t get a chance to test drive it because of this.
*One front tire goes flat fast, one rear tire has a slow leak.
*He is going to buy a battery before I look at it again on Friday so I can test drive it.
What do you think is the issue? Is it the battery or fuel system?
Do you have a way to verify what year this is with the ID number and serial number? Also, the ID number of the deck. I’ll upload pictures of the stickers.
*He says his driveway has an incline so snow and ice would pool around his door opening so he got tired of his wheels spinning. He decided to pay for plow service. (Home is big and nice with a lot of land.) He also decided to get a zero-turn mower so that’s why this 416-8 wasn’t used since after winter ‘21/‘22.
      He’s asking $500.

Will the PTO work from the 312 Hydro with a 12 hp Kohler onto the 416-8 Onan?  My PTO disc went today. Any help would be most appreciated.
