K341 governer/throttle adjustment

Recommended Posts

Team70R

Got the new Chinese carb on my k341 and I'm still having issues with it. When I open the throttle all the way with it not running everything opens as should but when it's running the throttle shaft on the carb only opens half way. As in the governer isn't functioning correctly or a spring is warn. It surges terribly and almost dies when you drive it. Definitely frustrating!!! Here's a video of it running.

It runs great if I open the throttle on the carb by hand!

Adjust the high speed mixture screw. Sounds like it is a bit lean.

The governor is working. Did you adjust the position of the governor arm on the governor shaft? That is required when a carb has been reinstalled on the engine. Procedure is in the service manual.

Section 04 in this manual

A governor tries to slow the rpm down. The faster the engine runs to more force it develops to slow the engine down.

There is a governor spring between the throttle cable and the governor arm.

The throttle cable tries to increase rpm by adding tension to the spring.

In your case the governor senses the desired rpm (set by the throttle cable) is too high so it slows the engine down.

Now its is too slow so allows the throttle spring pressure to increase the rpm but the engine is slow to respond caused by the lean running condition. Since it did not rev up the governor allowed too much throttle opening. When it does rev up it is too fast again and the cycle continues as we say surges or is governor hunting.

Let us know what happens.

Thank you Garry. I will mess with the high speed adjustment tonight and see what happens and also check the bowl for debris. Is it possible I don't have the throttle linkage between the carb and the governer at the correct length?

The length of the link between the arm and the carb throttle is not real critical. The governor shaft when adjusted to wide open throttle will correct and compensate for any differences and why the adjustment is necessary when a carb is reinstalled. The carb is not dowelled to the engine block so it can go back on in a slightly different location.

That makes sense! I did reset the governer arm on the governer shaft last night. Didn't seem to make a difference

Be sure and check the carb bowl as you mentioned. Some members have reported finding new Chinese carbs quite dirty from the factory

I'm hoping that's the issue!

I checked the bowl and it wasn't the cleanest but not bad. Sprayed everything down with carb cleaner and no luck still. Here's a video of it running while driving. I've tried adjusting the carb with no luck.

Sounds like you are loosing the ignition for a few seconds. When that happens to governor opens the throttle but with no ignition the extra fuel takes a few seconds to recover when the ignition comes back.

Do you have a way of monitoring the voltage to the coil (+) terminal when that happens?

I was thinking that could be a possibility. I can hook up a volt meter to it I reckon and see what happens. The coil has a pretty big rusty dent in it from the previous owner

So yesterday I picked-up a C175. She was rusting away as she was stored outside. She had a new to her Kohler K341. @squonk The previous owner indeed better had"LET AN ELECTRICIAN      CHECK his  SHORTS!"  as bad wiring shorted the battery out, and exploded/melted. She has a Sundstrand hydro pump with a Filter, is that normal? By the pump I believe it's a 1980. But you never now for sure as it's made in Oevel. Due to the bad wiring, the engine was in no running condition. But don't think the K341 has many hours on it. The hydro I don't know if it works. She was hard to push. So i lift up one wheel, so we could roll here one one wheel and the diff prevented the trans from locking up.
      So first things to do:
      1) get the engine running
      2) replace the steering wheel, but don't think removing it will be very hard as it's already split in two.
      3) replace the axleseals, the oil leak caused a lot of sandbuild up as she was mainly used on for leveling out a horse track.
      4) clean all the acid and remove all the old wiring to do a full rewiring
      5) replace the plastic seat pan with a metal.
      6)...

I'm looking forward on my first C.
It's also my first hydro, I don't know a lot about them and prefer actual gears. Simpler and need less maintenance (parts-shortage).
But since I couldn't find another project WH and me hearing a lot of good things about hydro's  on the forum..  I finally took the shot.

I bought this K341 and was wondering what it came on originally.  It's a 13 fin block and has been bored .020 over already.  It has a Kohler carb which may not be original.  Bill

We added dye to the oil on a D200 to find an oil leak and discovered the leak seem to be coming from the bottom of the governor.  We recently purchased this tractor so I do not know the history of it.
After removing the governor we found what looks like a casting flaw.  Not sure what else it could be.
One picture shows the dye and the other the casting flaw?

Any ideas what it is and best way to fix?

Rebuilding a C160. everything worked prior to rebuild
Engine was fairly high time so machined .020 over and rebuilt
Finished rewiring and made sure all the circuits were in order
Starter would spin the engine. Made new coil wire and installed new spark plug
Starter won't turn the engine. Tried several times with and without spark plug Same results
Starter was what I took off the tractor prior to rebuild but can't say it is orininal
So.......Am I missing something or is a new starter going to be the answer?????
      Thoughts?  Ideas?
      All help/input appreciated
BTW:  Don't know if it means anything but the gear does not retract when key is moved back to ON
