Just curious if this is the right way this goes together? Never work on this starter before. Is it tricky to put back together with the springs and the contacts with out them falling out of position. I should of left it on the engine. Thanks in advance.

You can make little c shaped sheet metal strips that hold the brush and spring in place. than you can get it all lined up , then remove the c strips.  The strips will go from the brush around the back of the starter.     Wayne

The Kohler manual has a sketch of how to make the C clips mentioned above

I believe your brushes need to go on top of the springs , as mentioned above you can make clips that will hold them in place while reasembling the starter.

Thanks every one  for the info. I was checking out the engine and took off the starter buy mistake.
