When I bought my house in 1986, I got the tractor the PO had, I eventually sunk $600 into an engine rebuild but found out later a short block would have been better. Even after that, the Teccy was gutless or perhaps the tractor wasted a bunch of power during transfer of power to the mower. I constantly had to tinker with the points and other issues. The guy who helped with messing about with the Sears became a lifelong friend, so that is much more important than how well the tractor worked out. I finally got tired of messing with it and bought a 416-8

I am glad you have a big 15 HP thumper in yours--so much better than what I had

They are solid tractors, however and they weigh in about 600# Mine looked like this

I am partial to the transmissions and scissors deck which are both "Bullet Proof" .... weak points were the carbs and ignition on the 120 Tecumsehs....  but as you can see I have a Honda transplant in the 12 and the ole B&S Thumper in the 15.   Will put either one against any tractor made .... and I love my C-81 and the Gt14.

That came out real nice. What colors did you use for the paint? They look like a perfect match. I have had many of the SS Suburban tractors. I had a blue one like yours that was a MINT low hr machine. It had the 12hp Techy on it and it was anything but gutless, it ran perfect. I wish I still had that one. Like Dennis said, I would agree that these tractors are under appreciated. I always have an eye out for another one...

From the not cast but heavy duty front axel to their durable 2 spd rears they meant business.  And the spring seat is the best ride I have!  I think they had as many attachments as Wheel Horse or even more.  I smile when I use one or see one but not because they look great.  I think when it comes to looks Wheel Horse wins big time.  But I still love 'em!

Ken you and Dennis are right on......The original Suburban "blue" color you refer to is "Jade Mist" which is no longer available. The closest match I have ever found is the "Hammered" finish Rust-Oleum 712 Verde Green. I prefer the Rust-Oleum Gloss Almond to any "White" and this is what I use..... of course a good prep and clean is a must and I always to prime with a good "etching" primer prior to apply the aforementioned paint. My goal is have a durable "decent" machine which is put to work as soon as completed...... there are NO trailer queens here...........

You must have excellent tastes! B)

I haven't listed them all.  24 at last count but some aren't quite complete and some I shouldn't counted at all yet huhBUT they good pretty quickly be deserving.  Sorry to say not a Cub, Deere or Ariens among them.  Obviously I've failed to some extent but I'm not dead yet!

The power king and jim dandy are some of my favorites. All of those on the list Id take. The Simplicity is a good one too but I really like the older units that were also badged for allis-chalmers.

Made one final change to complete this beast.....  I didn't have the stock "removable" side grille for this tractor and they are hard to come-by so..... I made a removable extension parted from an old broken grille I had in my stash. Think it came out workable.... leave to your discretion.....?   cheers

My sear st16 has a blown engine.its right at the bottom of the cooling fins, I believe the cylinder comes off seperate from the case. Not sure what in side looks lilke. all know is the its probaly filled with piston or con rod or something. the engine turns over half way and stops dead. the tractor is in pieces but i have all the peices i believe included the original owners manual. in great condition. Anywhere I can get that part? Or should I put different motor on it? backround info on the tractor. This sears is one of many lawn tractors on my grandfathers. He took great care of like everthing else he owned. sometime ago, it blew up and started taking it apart. the hood is off and put on a snapper outside to protect the engine. i have a box of parts sitting on the seat. its missing a rear wheel because i took it off for my grandpa because it fits his snowblower with a shattered rim. The Sears is sitting in the back of a shed so its not gonna get any worse. the mower deck is the only attachment i know of and its sitting outside somewhere. My plan is to restore the tractor and use it for its intended purpose. Any thoughts or suggestions?   I will put some pictures up soon.

Hi folks, It was suggested I start a build thread on this little project Im gonna attempt.  And I gotta admit, Im a little nervous about it, cause I've never tried it before.  My personal ground rules for this are keep it fun and keep it simple.  I`ve watched several youtube videos of hit/miss garden tractors and some of them are mechanical works of art.  But "dammit Jim!" I`m an electrician, not a mechanical engineer.  So here goes!!!

I picked up this sears suburban yesturday.  Its a hot mess.  Got it from a nice old timer about an hour away from me.  Kohler engine seems to run very good, and the tractor would drive, But no reverse.  My initial thought was thats a deal breaker for me.  My assumption was that the tranny was similar to alot of other tractors in that it had multiple gears inside it...1,2,3 and a reverse.  I didnt want to tackle trying to fix that sorta thing.   Well, i was wrong, and actualy the fella explained to me how the reverse was belt driven and he could never get it to work, and probably just needed adjusting or a proper belt.  Hmmmmmm..ok!!  So anyway, got the tractor brought it home.

If anybody has any insight as to the model and year of this tractor please chime in, i was told it was a 1965 Suburban.?

Came with bits and pieces of the original engine also.......

Hi folks, picked this up this evening.  Not much there to look at, but most of my motivation was looking for a decent prospect to put a hit and miss engine on.  The kohler actually runs pretty well though.  And the original motor came with it, although pretty much only in bits a pieces.  Only real concern right now is i cant get reverse to work, hopefully some searchin will instill some answers.

Probably gonna just try to get revervse fuctional first. Then try to fit a hit/miss to it and see how it goes, if it turns out decent, ill think about tearing it down and doing some cleaning and painting.  Im thinkink of using a Stover model k 1 1/2 hp hit and miss.  Anywho just sharing, mike
