953 Hydraulic Lift Lever?

Recommended Posts

T-Mo

I pull the panels off my 953 to see what is up with the hydraulic lift.  First the belt is on, and it's turning the pulley, but the belt is pretty worn.  Second, as seen in the video below, the lever doesn't do anything.  I guess I have to tear into it to see what the problem really is.

This could be one of two things, too low or no fluid, or the neutral return spring is broken..

First thing to do is check the fluid, I use ATF and some use hydraulic fluid. Pull the plug on the side toward the seat and fill it. Lowell sells kits for the pump and ram. Several good threads on here about rebuilding them, they are just like a H-2 unit.

I hope it just needs fluid, but from the way the lever is acting, there is absolutely no resistance, so it feels like something's broke inside.  I have the other 953 I could steal the pump off of until this one gets sorted out, but wouldn't like to do that yet.

The only resistance is the spring that centers the handle when you release it.

Looks like I have to open the pump up.  The spring is item 18 in the image below, I assume?

It looks like Lowell sells them for $25 if this one is broken:  https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/hydraulics.html#!/Wheel-Horse-Hy-2-Hy-3-spring-new-style/p/84960187/category=23548048

Scroll back up to the exploded view. Remove the nut #14, and the reservoir will come off.

Remove the fill plug and drain as much fluid as you can. Place the cast steel pump in a vise with the reservoir facing upward. Remove the nut on the end of the center shaft and your reservoir should pull off, may hav.e to unscrew it a bit. Lowell @wheelhorseman has all the parts you'll need
