P220 Heads and intake installation

Recommended Posts

I'm ready to install the heads and intake back onto the engine. I chased the threads of the bolts and the block and flushed them with brake cleaner and air. Do I oil the bolt threads before installing them? I would think you would for the head bolts to get the correct torque readings but since there aren't any lock washers on intake bolts, do you use thread locker instead of oil? Thanks in advance.

i have always used a lite coat of anti sieze on the head bolts,

BUT, i stay on the low side of the torque spec.

thank you. boomer ( the used onan engine parts guy, also NOS and new )

:text-yeahthat:I prefer antiseize as well but some guys use oil. I don't think it matters either way as long as you torque to specs and use something to make metal slide together nicely. Correct pattern is a must and is in the manual.

Plus 1 on what boomer says.  I use a light coating of Permatex anti-sieze. That includes the intake and exhaust bolts too!

Torque all bolts on any engine is my motto Raz....if the manual doesn't give specifics for that assembly use specs common to that bolt size. If you don't have those let us know we'll get you them.

I always torque bolts during assembly! Heck, I even torque the lug nuts when I swap wheels around on my cars. I do have the specs for the bolts but since the intakes are only 6-10 ft-lbs and there aren't lockwashers on the bolts, I was concerned about them loosening up without some type of thread locker on them. It looked like there was something white in the threads and on the bottom of the bolts when I cleaned them so I thought it might be some kind of threadlocker. I'll give the anti-seize a try and see what happens. Thanks to all who responded.

:handgestures-thumbupright: always a good move

A little medium strength (blue loctite) on the manifolds would not hurt.

Replacing a bad valve gasket on my 520 hc ... does anyone have the torque settings for the intake manifold and the exhaust bolts?

I use grease. Learned that from working on Model As and flathead fords.
