Spinde play (acceptable??)

Recommended Posts

So I was tightening the blade to the spindle and I had noticed there was some play when I tried to move the tightened blade up and down (shown in the pic)

This normal?

In addition the spindle bearings if the deck shell is compromised, rust, cracks etc. that can lead to play

I can't upload pics

I know there's a nut UNDER the blade when you take the blade off and a under the other side on the pulley for the belts.  I guess I can tighten those.  But the deck looks in good shape as well as the spindle

If I pull up vertically on the blade there is a tiny bit of play

There is a very thin washer on top of each blade on my 310-8 (37" SD) and 418-A (42" SD). Do you have those?

Yes I have a thin washer on the outside of the blade and a thicker washer on the other side.

Thrust bearing? So, should I put an additional washer on the top of the deck or by the blades?

Ok yes I have both of those, but tankman referred to a thrust washer.  Where would I add it?  If that would eliminate the play?

Well, all the parts to a spindle are shown.

If you have everything shown in the exploded diagrams and both top and bottom nuts are tight then either your bearings are bad or spindles are worn.

Gotcha!

I guess I will take a look at the spindle, going by the DWG on one of these threads it doesn't seem like a pain in the butt to do.

Where does anybody get parts for these classic rigs?  I take it a spent bearing is easier to replace then a spindle

Someone here said 1/8 inch play is normal.

The only 1/8" play  I can think of on a Wheel horse is the in and out movement of the rear axles....There should be no free paly in a spindle.

Dang it!  Well I tightened and greased everything up that I needed to.  I guess after cutting the grass this time, I need to take the spindle apart and inspect the spindle since it must be a worn bearing.

Where do you all go to get parts for the Wheel horses?

Looked back but don't see where the deck has been identified.

Depending on the model/age there where different spindle assemblies used.

I think this was the last design and the bearings are a common standard available from any supplier.

This was a previous model to the above one

Once you open the links you can click on a small illustration of the spindle assemblies used and it will enlarge.

The 109966 ball bearing is a very common 6203 bearing available from any bearing supplier.

.669"x1.575"x.472" (17mmx40mmx12mm)

A 6203-2RS has 2 seals and often less expensive that bearings with one seal because of supply and demand. Just pop out a seal on each of them and install with the remaining seals facing out.
