1054 Hard Shifting

Recommended Posts

koalassquad

My 1054 is a very strong horse, but it has an issue that i think is the downside. The issue is the transmittion, it is VERY hard to get into gear. how could i fix this and make it easier shifting, like my 314?

I would suggest pulling t flushing tranny with diesel and run it around a while then refill with new gear oil.

i was thinking about cleaning it out, because it does have a bad seal on the input shaft.

Do you mean it is difficult to move the shifter

Or do you mean it grinds going into gear?

No grinding... just difficult to move the shifter is most likely moisture and rust.

Could be on the shift rails.

Could be on the sliding gears.

Water in the transmission will make the oil less slippery and cause rust inside the case.

Do as Stevebo suggests and clean it out.

But the only way to remove rusty scale on the case is to disassemble it.

If you remove the shift lever you will be able to take a peak inside to see what is going on. Back off on the locking nut and remove the "Dogpoint Screw".

If you fill it with diesel, a safe amount of extra heat  is you friend to help clean it out (Using Proper Precautions)

Set the tractor outside in an open area

Drain old transmission oil (lift the front of the tractor to get it to drain over the transmission hump) Then sit transmission down.

Wipe off any residual oil on the outside of the transmission

Fill transmission brim full of diesel (so shifter rails are covered)

If possible jack rear of tractor up, put on blocks and start tractor. (or use an electric motor and belt to turn the transmission input pulley

Put a  electric heater 2-3 foot away blowing on transmission and let it run in each gear and periodically run through the gears (moving the shift rails and sliding gears until it feels easier to shift ) (do this for about an hour)

(the idea is to get the transmission to around 100-120 degrees to help soften old crud (Your are not trying to get it smoking hot)

Remove heater, and with transmission still warm drain transmission (lift up front to drain over hump)

Fill transmission with new oil

BE SAFE

Alrighty, I cleaned the tranny out with a mixture of diesel and kerosean. I flushed it completly after letting it sit for about 6 hours. The amount of rust and varnished gear oil that came out was impeckable. I also took this time to replace the shifter, and it now goes into gear lighter, but there is surface rust on the little hole that the shifter slides between.

5 big wheels, in various forms or stages.  One with melted wiring, one runner, one in need of an engine, one full project and one in the middle of nap time.  @953 nut thanks again for turning on my big wheel switch!

So, this kind of was destined to show up, I guess.  My wife found it a while back and was trying to buy it for me for our anniversary, but I was already in the middle of helping @Bow_Extreme get a deal on it!  Well, come to find out, he called looking to possible unload it.  SOLD SOLD SOLD!  The color is odd, but it adds character.  I think it’ll stay.  I’m thinking this might show up to Uncle Jim’s Plow day, snowblower engine and all to work the field!

I inherited a wheel horse and have always loved them. It's a 1967 1257 with a 12 hp Kohler. Few questions. If I find a 10 or 14, will all my external parts fit ? I almost put a Chinese motor on but really dont want to modify stuff. I know I have the big oil pan. Anything else I should know? I'm trying to find a good used motor but it's being a little tough. I'm in Nampa Idaho so we don't have a lot of wheel horses over here. If I ever drive out to the east coast or Midwest I'm bringing me back lawn mowers!

Have a 1964 WH 1054. The tractor will steer tight to the left but only half the angle to the right. Drag link will hit the stops on axle on both sides. The steering gear has more teeth to go on the right but stops on the axle stop. Linkage is all good and snug. Seems if I adjust the linkage I will put the wheels out of straight. Is this normal for this model? Haven't tried to adjust anything yet, still trying to study what I could change so that it will steer the same radius both directions. Will get up close pics to post later. The linkage from the main gear to drag link is connected from the bottom up. I notice some go from the top down, I studied mine and it seems to be correct because of the bend in the link to go under the frame. The stops may have been added later, but seems it could be factory; even w/o the stops it would steer in same way, just have more radius but still short to the right.
