Rebuilding a Wheel Horse underdog

Finally got her together!  Everything went together well, adjusting the valves is a real bear on these.  Grinding the valve a hair at a time is painstaking.  So glad it's done.  Need to run it in a little more then comes the transplant into the :wh:

How you line up the timing marks.  The mark on the crank gear is hidden by the ball bearing so they put one on the crank itself.

Heavy duty Oregon starter.  4 1/2" long compared to 3 5/8 stock.  Had to cut the tin to make it fit.

Sounds pretty good - typical Briggs opposed Twin rattles as usual . Always had a love/hate thing for those engines , rattled like heck even new but would last just shy of forever . Had one even ingest two air cleaner screws and stuck one in an exhaust valve - removed the screw , put it back together and went back to blowing snow like nothing happened , even with a used head gasket...lol . They never really got the recognition they deserved , mostly due to being used in sub-brand lawn equipment . They would survive pretty well being overheated and would plug their cooling fins pretty easily , but would always run despite serious abuse and neglect...

Yes they are kind of a rattle trap.  Sounds like they have a permenant valve tap to me.  They were used in lower budget tractors, you are right.  I had a cheap craftsman tractor 15 years ago or so with a vertical opposed in it.  Let's just say the engine was the best part about it.  Must have been cheap is all I can think because they are good, reliable power.  Almost seems like Briggs designed them to be throw always but they ended up lasting forever!  Thanks again Sarge for the bearing mount tip, really helped out.

Not sure what the bearing mount tip was , but glad to help out .

Never did figure out what it was about how those engines were designed that created such a rattle to them , seen several nearly thrown away by owners thinking they were on their last legs....lol .

Red loctite isn't made to do that , although there is a version made specifically to do that job - https://www.permatex.com/products/thread-compounds/retaining-compounds/permatex-bearing-mount-for-relaxed-fits/

Pay very close attention to the directions ...

Used it to mount the timing gear to the crank

Hey, very nice. Is that a muffler in that stack? If so, where did you get it? Thanks

Thanks.  Check out member @jimkemp on here, he makes all kinds.  Came with the muffler, chrome piece and rain cap.  The big Briggs wants to blow the rain cap clean off at idle, might need to add a little weight to see if I can get it to bounce like the one lung Kohlers.

Maybe I should have welded some heavy washers to the rain cap , theres a lot of volume coming through that pipe :)

I bagged another Briggs powered off brand for my eclectic collection.
The seller listed it as a 66 Speedex S-14, but I am thinking the S-14 just had a fwd/reverse gear box & this has a 4 speed Peerless?
Still has the funky belt tensioner that moves the whole engine forward to put tension on the drive belt.
Even has a counter fit off brand slot hitch in back.

Well I scored a gently used Briggs 900 series to repower my new 606! Doesn't have an air cleaner cover for it so I zip tied the filter on after I cleaned all the junk out of the carb and it ran good. Now it will rev slow and die after it idles a second. I'm guessing there's some more gunk in the carb that I either missed or broke free??

There are no markings on the frame but the engine is a B&S.
