ACR-spring K301S ?

Recommended Posts

LJUSNINGEN

Hi!

Bought another Wheel Horse some time ago, and finally got around to take the engine apart, to check that everything is in order.

Previous owner said it had flames coming out of the muffler...

Found two things, first of all exhaust valve has to be exchanged.

But the second was more fun....the spring holding the fly weights for the automatic compression reduction was missing, and someone had put a cable tie (plastic strap) in the engine to keep the tab from lifting the exhaust valve! A cable tie!? And also, they had drilled a hole in the top, and put a manual compression release there.

Now, I don't know if one could find that spring somewhere.

Looks like you have to buy a complete camshaft to get it?

Anyone know if I could find the spring for the K301S?

I attach a photo of the "new" C-120 8-speed, proving that there are some work to be done... ;)

I have removed the fueltank special holder, and bought a fuel pump instead....

Also have removed the DC-generator driven by the PTO, and ordered new Voltage Regulator from eBay, hoping the stator works.

To be continued....

The booster seat is an interesting item. I doubt that the spring is available any more, but could be.

Some people just shouldn't be allowed to use tools!   :ychain:

A couple of years ago my jd dealer did a dealer search and got a new compression release spring for me for a 12hp 301.

If you can't find just the spring somewhere, you can always find used cams with decent springs on eBay.

Well, problem solved. Found a cam with a spring at in my neighbours garage! :)

Also installed a new exhaust valve, new fuel pump, new points and condenser.

New gaskets, new oil, etc...

So, now the engine runs like a charm! Just listen...without muffler though, so be ready to turn down your sound. ;)

:woohoo:

Sounds great, but remember that that engine should not idle below 1100 RPM's. Doing so will cause lack of lubrication.

      Greetings all,
Wishing you all safety and good health to begin with.

Checking in on an old topic which need be refreshed.  I understand the ACR can fail on a Kohler.
Leaving compression to be too high thus creating a hard start.

Give credit where due, I have replaced and installed brand new:
      Stator
      Starter
      Solenoid
      Spark Plug
      Spark Plug Wire
      All new cables

Yet still, what I am experiencing is a positive, immediate turn on the starter.
Then a dead stop.  I'll (wince) hold the key on and in about 20 seconds or so, it will eventually start.
Don't worry, I KNOW that isn't good for ANYTHING. Don't lecture....

What I'd like your opinion on is: do you also think this is an issue with the ACR and should the engine fly and top head be pulled to
change this out?  I see on some forums where this part fails, cracks and/or just breaks.
      Thoughts and help?

I know there is also a RED brother in Richmond VA, (can't remember your handle Sir)
I have garage kept and pampered this beautiful 416XT and it looks new with beauty new 52" deck and all.
Just want to do right by her and get this issue straightened out.  (chewing up a battery each season even with heavy and trickle charges)

      Thoughts?
      Am I crazy?

      Cheers to all!
      JC
