Rj-58 engine

Recommended Posts

hounddoghundzsa

I recently bought an rj-58 over the summer. It's got really nice sheet metal, nice deck and appears everything is there. The bad part is it's got an unknown, non-running engine. My question is what engine is supposed to be on this tractor and what else will fit?

Thanks

The motor used in the RJ-58 was a 4 hp Clinton B1290 or a Kohler K-90.

OR a 4hp Kohler K-91. (spec #'s 31307A or 31388A, I believe.)

I'm deferring to your expertise TT. Did they use 31388A on some of the '58s? I thought that denoted the change to the non oil bath breather and different starter set up used on the 400 and 401?

1958 & 1959 seem to be a very cloudy mess when it comes to "correct" engines. (1960 seems to be "up in the air" quite frequently too.)

We might have to send Dustin to the basement to get the verdict.

I do know that a 401 should have a K91-41437A, but I'm sure that has also been proven different by now.

K-91T 31388A with the paper air filter & Fairbanks-Morse recoil was used on some late model RJ-59's. In 2002 I communicated with a gentleman who had a RJ-59 with a serial number in the 20,000 range. Not only did it have the 31388A used on the 400, but also the larger, solid seat pan.

I guess I didn't enable the email notification - was starting to wonderwhy I didn't hear anything! Thanks for all your comments! Hopefully I can run across one of these engines - seems like the smaller they are the harder they are to find.
