I have a guy looking to sell me an original wheelhorse sickle bar attachment. Assuming that is the case, what is a "good deal" on something like this?? I have no idea as I have never even seen one other than pics. Aslo, is there anything special I should look for problem wise on this attachment?? thanks-

Stevbo is it a front or side sickle bar mower? I gave 150 for my front sicle bar mower for a round hood. Just make sure you get all the brakets and mounts! Stuff like that is hard to find. :hide:

I have the belly mount 42" sickle bar mower. I gave $175 for it.

my model number of my SBM is 7-1321 formerly known as

sms-425. You can plug those numbers into the Toro parts

viewer to get a drawing of the unit. (if this is the same type

you are considering buying).

Unfortunately one of the C clips on the inside of mine came off

and drove the clevis pin up against the side and "ate" a hole in the

access panel of the gearbox. I had to have a new pin made.

I have yet to retry it.

Things to look for. The cutting bar should slide relatively free

"back and forth" in the cutting motion. No binding or abrupt stopping

while in operation (using your hand to turn the large drive pulley).

There should "not be" a lot of "play" in relation from the turning

of the large pulley to the movement of the cutting bar. This could

indicate worn out parts on the inside. If there is play.....but yet

functions...all is not lost.....just worth less money. Those internals

might/will have to be rebuilt.

In essence this is a three assembly/part machine. It will have the

front PTO bracket which bolts on under the frame. Then it will

have the gearbox and cutting bar assembly. And a lift arm to lift

it off the ground to avoid obstacles as well as a lift rod (underneath).

This is normally a noisey machine when running. See if the owner

can demonstrate it for you (allthough unlikely he has or will mount it).

If it is in good running condition......$300 to $350 is not unheard of.

Good luck..... keep us posted!

I paid $150 for my SMS-425 complete. That's a belly/side mount. The front mount fits the round hood suburbans. If it's complete, in decent shape, and fairly inexpensive........... buy it. You could always resell for a profit or trade. A lot of people are looking for them. If you decide not to get it let people on this site know where it is.

I paid a little over $700 for mine about 5 years ago, but it also came with a one-owner 876 / snowthrower / 36" mower deck / 42" dozer blade / and huge box of NOS parts.

I have since sold everything but the SBM and the dozer blade and ended up breaking even on the money.

BTW - they aren't that noisy if nothing is trying to fall out through the side of the gearbox. :hide: As a matter of fact, mine makes a pleasant little "clicka-clicka-clicka...." sound as it cuts away at the weeds along the creek - much more pleasant than the two-stroke scream from the Ryobi brush cutter. :D

I will say this though.... unless they're on a hydro or a 6/8 speed in low range, they aren't very nice to use.

True it has added noise when it is trying to eat a hole in the gearbox.

But that chicka chicka chika that the cutting bar makes is noisy to me.

Guess noise is in the ear of the beholder.... :hide:
