scorpion red horse 66 8 #1 Posted October 17, 2016 8 speed has very bad looking oil in it. after draining what should use to flush it out, that will not harm axle seals
rmaynard 14,864 #2 Posted October 17, 2016 Most of us use diesel fuel or kerosene. Be sure to lift the front end of the tractor so that oil in the front of the transmission can get over the hump in the bottom. I put in about two quarts, then run it around the yard for a few minutes, let it sit a few more then drain as noted. Refill with 2 quarts of 90-140 API GL-5 gear oil, 80/90W gear oil or whatever is on sale at Walmart . Fill through either the dipstick tube (if you have one) or remove the shifter and fill through there. Using the plug on the left side of the transmission will leave you up to 10 oz. short.
shallowwatersailor 3,213 #3 Posted October 17, 2016 I like to put the tractor up on jackstands and run it with diesel fuel inside the gearbox for about fifteen minutes. Then do two flushes with cheap gear oil and then a fill with the good stuff. There is a casting ridge inside that does prevent all of the oil emptying so it needs to be tipped to the rear to empty completely. Also install a new rubber boot over the gear lever to prevent water from entering.
