522xi ch22 Throttle Control Plate

Can anyone send me a detailed picture of how the throttle / choke plate is supppsed to go together? There is a large movement of the throttle lever before I get any actual throttle response.

 

I am fairly certain that the issue is in an incorrect setup or poor adjustment of this plate. The cable is smooth and attached well and the top plate moves easily.

I said the same thing, and at least two guys here said theirs was the same. It moves about half throttle before the engine speed changes. If I tightened the cable, it started to change speed lower, but then you reach the end of cable about half throttle.

That's good to know! I tried searching on here, but the wealth of information on the XI's just isn't up to the level of the classic styles yet.

 

I'm going to keep digging as I can't believe that's how they intended it to be, but maybe they did? :confusion-shrug:

There seems to be about 1/4 - 1/3 movement or so of the throttle lever on the Kohler engine before the engine comes off of idle. My 520xi is a bit quicker to react than the 518xi. But the diesel's throttle on the 523Dxi reacts immediately! Sometimes I forget and start it with too much initial throttle.

Thanks for the info guys. Mine has about 3/4 travel before any throttle response, so I think I will adjust it. However, I might be going another path... not sure yet.

I concur with Brian and John.  My throttle lever moves at least half way with no engine response.  I believe in the old adage: "if it ain't broke don't touch it"

Agreed! I just replaced throttle

lever and cable. It wouldn't hold

any position. It prob moves 1/2 way before the throttle engages. Is what it is.

Thanks guys, this engine could probably be adjusted a bit, but it sounds like it wouldn't improve enough to make it worthwhile even bothering. As you probably saw in my other post, I will be swapping this out, so I am hoping to get pretty instant throttle response with the EFI! (fingers crossed!)

I haven't been impressed with the efi kohlers we have had. Maybe its just the application but the ones we have with throttle cables idle,stutter,idle again and then jump back up with cable movement. Not just one mower either. I have one in my area I take care of that has less than 80 hours on it and it hasn't ran right since we got it. The ones that are throttle by wire, they rev like crazy. Low,mid and high settings on a switch. I keep waiting for a rod to come out when I kick the blades on because it goes wide open throttle. I'd be interested in what motor you are looking at.Hope you have good luck.

I am hoping to have better luck! I am hedging my bets a bit by purchasing the diagnostic cable and software, so I can actually tune the engine as I please and see all the sensor info and stats. 

 

Its a Kohler ECH730 (essentially its one step larger engine than the stock CH22, rated 23-25HP depending on what year you look at). I know in some of the older EFI units they had a bosch kit on them that I have heard people struggling with, but this unit is branded all Kohler, and I have read good things (and bad, but mostly good). :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

Well I hope it works out. After seeing you are an electrical engineer, I have no doubt you'll make it work.  :thumbs:  I would love efi but not in the cards. What are looking to get out of the one you're removing?:happy-jumpgreen:

I haven't really done the research to see what its "worth". I do know that there are some piddly things that it needs. It has oil drips and needs the shrouds cleaned, but until I get it out and get some pictures I wont know for sure.

 

I will keep you up to date on what I find, I didn't run it for very long before it was put up on blocks for all the work I have been doing, so I am not real familiar with it other than it runs well.

      For Sale NOS M12S Short Block, still in the original box.  I bought it pre-emptively when Kohler was phasing out the Magnums.  Thought I would have it on hand if one of mine needed it, or maybe I would find a tractor with a busted rod for cheap.  Neither of those things happened, the darn things just keep running.
       
      Part number 77 522 35, probably built in late '05, it's the combination replacement kit Kohler made to fit WheelHorse or Gravely, machined to bolt directly into the Gravely transaxle, but also has spacers to mount WheelHorse PTO clutch/brake.  Also has a bunch of gaskets and seals packed with it, probably all you need to install it.
       
      And it's heavy, so it's not practical for me to ship.  Buyer arrange to pick up near Elida OH, I can lift it about knee high to help load.
       
      Asking $800 or might consider trade for a good center mount grader blade.

      Husband wants some advice… lol.  So we did an engine swap today on two suburbans because we could not get the one engine to spark all the time to get it running!  The engine ran last year before parking for the winter sleep…. Points were changed out for new the engine was cleaned to make good contact has new spark plug new coil condenser we even switched out the fly wheel today thinking maybe the magnet was weak…. Advice???   It would where are you out yanking on the recoil five or so times and maybe only get the points to fire twice if you’re lucky..  checked the gap and pull again… same thing over and over!  Thanks in advance!
