Which muffler would be best?

Recommended Posts

The WheelHorse is a 1970 Charger 12 w/Tecumseh engine.  This unit is still running the original tubular muffler, measuring about 8" long x 4" diameter.  The muffler seems to be worn out so there is a lot of exhaust noise when I mow and that means I must wear some good ear protection!

I have seen photos of WheelHorse running those small round mufflers that look like a soupcan.  How do they perform on a 12 hp?  Are they very quiet running?

However, original style mufflers, if still available new, will cost you about $200.00, but they are worth it if you want a quiet horse.

You may want to consider a stack, look good and sound good. IMHO ;)

You could try using black pipe to extend the can muffler to the current exhaust output location on the lower left side of the engine or do a stack. I went can on the 312-8 franken tractor because they were in the clearance bin at tsc for a dollar. DB's didnt bother me because i used it to tend the gravel drive and pull wheelies. Now with campground crusing and the stock pully back on I want quiet.

Pepper shakers are cheap and LOUD!

Others are NOT cheap by FAR easier on your ears!  AND your neighbors ears!

I bought and use a 1986 416-8 that someone booger welded a pepper pot onto. Holy cow is it obnoxious!.

I asked a local guy about muffler recommendations while picking up a deck spindle he ordered for me. He looked at me, ran over and dug through a pile on/around some shelves, and popped up with a brand new factory muffler! (Covered in dust) He said he had it for a long time, and they cost over $130. He said he needed to clean up, get rid of it.

$30!

Now I have to cut booger pipe off of original elbow and TIG weld new nipple on.

I can't wait to mow without sounding like a WW2 Spitfire on a straifing run!

Okay, thanks guys.

I think I will check into that Nelson Muffler because it should be quiet and not too expensive.

Garry, you really should charge something for your services!  I took notes!

By the way, for those who are price conscientious:
