Shifter knob removal 1961 model 701

Does the shifter knob unscrew or is it pressed on ? I'm replacing the dust boot and the knob is stuck.

I believe it should unscrew, I've never seen one pressed on

If it is stuck, I wrap an old piece of a  leather belt around it and use a big pair of channel lock pliers. The leather will grip without the teeth of the pliers digging into the plastic.

Two small pipe wrenches should be used, one on the shaft and one, with a piece of leather as Bob suggested, on the knob. Pull the wrenches toward each other so you don't damage the shift lever or transmission.

I keep scraps of old inner tube around for the same thing... wrap it up, clamp it down in a pipe wrench with a cheater if necessary!

I would suggest removing the shift lever from the transmission then clamping the shift lever in a bench vise with brass jaws to prevent scarring first. Then attempt removal of said knob as described by others.
