520-8 Surging problem

Recommended Posts

Ricker49

I recently acquired a 1990 520-8. Great shape. 458 hours. Changed fluids, cleaned, etc. and runs great.

EXCEPT when it's been running a while and under load from the mower deck.

Surges badly. Have had it to a mechanic twice. Second time he cleaned the carburetor and pronounced it fixed.

Same thing. Any suggestions?

I bought a 516 and it was doing the same thing - after you ran it for several minutes and put it under a load it would surge badly - decided the fuel pump was weak ( but working ) and couldn't keep up with the demand so I put an electric pump on it and the surging stopped...could just be a coincidence  - or not -- I don't know, just happy that it stopped.  For what it is worth - hope you find the problem..

My 1888 520H was surging under load also.  I cleaned the carb three times and that didn't help.  Replaced the fuel filter, air filter, and added an electric fuel pump and that made no difference.  So I tried adjusting the governor linkage.  I moved the rod one way and the surging got worse, so I moved it the other and the surging was gone.  I still don't know what made it change, but that P220 is running like new now.

There is a welch plug near the idle mixture screw, be sure that it didn't fall out.

Try cleaning the idle jets. It's a common problem  with onans.  I use a small wire to clean the holes in the jet.

You might also want to check the intake manifold. Those onans have two piece manifold that is put together with sealant. They are known to leak between the halves causing a vacuum leak and leaning out the mixture. I'd start with the carb, but you've been there. The manifold is just something else to check.

You can check the manifold by spraying carb cleaner or starting fluid along the edges of it if it speeds up you need to pull it apart and reseal it

I read the service bullitin and its for 300, 400, 500 and 700 series tractors. What is a 700 series? I have never heard of such a thing.

700 are the zero-turn models

The first was the Dixie chopper and they later used 600 for the series.

I have this 520-8 that needs some love and restoration expertise, and I don't have the time or gumption to take on this project and give it the TLC it deserves.  Local pickup near Bloomington, IN only.... (almost - I might be able to meet somewhere but not too far, and I don't have a trailer.)

The Onan P220 runs, but not well. I repaired the seal on the intake manifold, replaced the carb & spark plugs, adjusted valve clearance, and tried adjusting the governor, but it still surges. It has the swept front axle but does not have reduction steering. As far as I know, all is original, and the hour meter is at 610.

Several attachments could be included in the deal if desired, for a bit extra. Either a 60" SD or 48" SD deck, single stage snowblower, and/or snow plow blade (would need to get extension kit for front wheel clearance).

I have a 1996 520H Wheel Horse for sale.  The tractor has just over 800 hours on it.  It comes with a 48 inch deck.  The deck is a 1995 and has over 1,500 hours on it, as it came brand new with my 312-8 that I sold several years ago.  This 520-H has the swept front axle so it can handle a 60 inch deck.  I just replaced the battery and the deck belt this summer.  The engine is a 20HP Onan and it starts right up but requires the full choke.  The transmission is an Eaton 1100-062, hydrostatic.  The deck is in rough shape but the spindles appear to be in good working order.  The right rear tire has some cracking.  The original operator's manual for the 520H is included, as is the original operating and maintenance instructions for the deck, plus the installation instructions for the deck.  Also included is a new PTO belt and several miscellaneous deck wheels and rollers.  Additional pictures available upon request.  Asking $500.
