Mower spring on model 854.

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I was mowing the lawn last night with the 1964 model 854, when the mower suddenly stopped!

I looked down, and the pedal to engage the mower was flopping around loose..

I shut her down to investigate, and discovered the spring had somehow popped off..

I was able to find the spring in the grass about 10 feet behind the mower..

Took me awhile to figure out how to re-attach it! ;) I do have the 854 owners manual, but it isnt helpful in this case..

there is a diagram that shows the spring, but there isnt enough detail to make out how it attaches..

I was able to get it up and running enough to finish the lawn, but I know its not connected correctly..

Here are some photos, taken after I re-connected the spring:

The spring in question:

I think the rear end is connected properly (maybe)

But I know the front end is totally wrong..this is not how its supposed to be connected:

does anyone have an 854 they could look at and maybe post some photos of the proper way to hook this back up?

thanks!

Scot

The top of that spring should go through another cotter pin, see pic.

I don't have an actual picture immediately handy, but I know there are some here on the forum somewhere.

edit:.... found one.  although the link credited is broken (pre-2011 crash)

Thanks Jason!

(the link you posted doesn't work..it did the thing where it replaced part of the link with just dots..

the three dots (periods) in  "php?...pic" is supposed to contain more of the link..

could you try re-posting it please?

But I think you have given me the clue I needed!

I couldnt figure out *how* the spring came off in the first place! its a very robust spring, and seems very firmly attached..

but your mention of a second cotter pin explained it..

the spring fell off because the strength of the spring pulled the "front" cotter pin apart! ;)

the "front" cotter pin seemed a bit mangled as I removed it when I tried to re-attach the spring..

So now I know I need a new cotter pin for the front..

Also, I see now that I probably have the spring reversed..

I didnt notice it when I took the photo, but I can see it now:

there is a "shadow" of the spring etched into the paint! and it looks like the "larger hook" end of the spring goes to the rear..

So I think I have it now..thanks!

(I would still love to see other photos though, to confirm..)

thanks,

Scot

The picture is actually from @buckrancher's 854 rebuild, if you're interested.... brian's 854 complete rebuild if there's not a pic below, go to page 4 of that topic.
