Whining Sound when mowing

Recommended Posts

SharonBen

I have a '89 (I believe) 310-8 model with a 37" side discharge deck.  I have found a lot of good information out here but haven't asked a specific question - til now...

I'm getting a whine from the mower drive system whenever I hit thicker grass.  The grass isn't THAT thick.

I tried loosening and tightening the Mule drive, replaced the belt, laid some wax on the belt as dressing.  None of these solve the problem.

Wondering if the source could be something other than the mower drive belt.   The sound does seem to be coming more from the engine area than the deck.  Not from the engine itself but the drive wheel for the belt.

Any ideas?   Thanks much

Are you thinking that the belt is slipping a little under load??  Welcome to Red Square.  :)

image.thumb.jpeg.42fd16b0f6f34c34ceb90ba7545561f8.jpegI would take a look at the pto clutch adjustment. The pto is right under the exhaust, so this is best to do when the engine is cool to prevent burns. There is a threaded section on the engagement rod, jut give it one turn at a time until the pto lever has a nice snap upon engagement. Have had the same issue, and it is a high pitch squeal from the clutch on the pto slipping. Gluck! (Sorry it's upside down, but u can see the adjustment if you do a handstand)

Newbie here. 310-8 won't start. Battery is dated 10/19. Did crank a couple times but started losing ummph. Should I replace it or attempt to charge it? Can't tell if the battery is frozen. Never knew until today that batteries could freeze and that it's dangerous to charge a frozen battery. It's been single digits with wind chill the last couple weeks here.
