front axle slop at the pivot bearing

Recommended Posts

My '63 953 has a goodly amount of  play at the front axle pivot bearing. Looks to be a good 1/8". You can hear it knock back and forth while driving. Is there a spacer that should be in  there or is this normal?

953 nut

You shouldn't have that much play in the front axle pivot. My guess would be that over the past 53 years a few folks didn't keep this lubricated and the pin has worn to the point that you have play. If you get lucky the frame and axle pivot points are not too badly worn and you can make a new pin to replace it. If the axle and/or frame have worn down then you will need to drill them out and insert steel bushings to tighten the steering back up.
