Now that I've got the red and black painted, I'm painting the whites and just now getting cold feet while looking at the bas-relief WHEELHORSE lettering across the top of the grill.

any tips/pointers as to the best approach to this task?

Thanks for all the help you guys bring, I don't think I could have gotten this far without you.

I've seen, lot's of people recommend...

the paint pens and a steady hand. :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

Some of the guys have painted the letter area of the hood White before the red.

Then once dry, they gently rub the red paint off leaving the white paint using wet sanding with very fine sand paper.

OR

Wipe rubber cement over all the letters.  Let dry.  Rub/roll off the high surface.

Paint White.

Dry.

Rub off the rest of the rubber cement.

The rubber cement will work as a stencil or masking agent.

OR

Find a painter with a steady hand.  Pin striper?  Sign guy?

I went with the natural look on my 702.  Notice how straight the sanded areas are....

In theory, if the hood was painted white, then red, then carefully sanded down the letters, the white letters would look very good.

It's quicker and a lot simpler doing it with a paint pen, and I'm not that steady of hand.

That looks real nice.
I am going to attempt it with a paint pen first. If that doesn't work out so hot, then I'll try the rubber cement trick.
I hope mine comes out as well.

I'm no body man but I think i could get some of my dents out to look better, if not perfect.
Did you have to remove any dents in that hood?
It looks pristine.

It had a few. Hammer & dolly to get the dents out, then Rage Gold filler.

I am no body man either. Practice, practice, practice. The hood was painted with acrylic urethane automotive paint.

I could never seem to get the paint to flow out of the pen nice though...    :confusion-shrug:

end up pushing down on the tip so much that the paint ends up everywhere except on the letters.

Any tips on getting them pens to work right Bob?    :confusion-helpsos:

Make sure that when you buy them you get fresh ones. I used to use the Elmer's pens, but they got hard to find. I now use Sharpie. Look for a date code. Don't expect the paint to cover in one pass. That hood took about 4 coats plus minor touch-up. When I do the plastic dash panels, it always takes at least 3 coats. Maybe I can give you some hands-on lessons at the big show.

Use the rubber cement along with the pen. If the paint dribbles on the cement, after it dries it will rub off with your hand,:greetings-waveyellow:

      I need to re-power my 552.
The only thing I can afford is a 3/4 shaft job.
I know I'll have to change pullies, but am I going to run into problems, seeing as the original was a 1 inch shaft?

I bought a great engine of CL for $20 (Briggs 5.5hp).
it was on a snowblower, however, and has no throttle or choke control from the driver seat.
i got a choke control hooked up, but the throttle control is being finicky.
i am mechanically apt, but not familiar with all the different intricacies of different units and I'm assuming the way this type of engine works is interfering with my new linkage I installed?
anybody got any tips I can try to get this working properly?

Sorry for all the 'newbie' questions, guys, but no one has told me to take a hike yet so I'll push my luck with another (likely) redundant question; What is the correct drive belt size for my 552, anybody know?
And an aside; Does the mower deck operate on the same drive belt, or is that going to be a 'take-off' pulley next to it (I am painting it so I can't align it up to tell ATM).

      Thanks again.

I am going to rebuild my H55.
i am taking pics to remind me where it goes and what it looks like, but the fuse block had been disconnect years before I got it.
can someone explain the wiring to/from this block?
is it possible to put lights on this electrical system?

iver just about got this thing back on the job thanks to you all.

i just tried to upload a pic and it won't let me.
ill post one from my computer soon.

I didn't take the trans apart when I restored my 552.
the last time this thing actually worked was about 16 years ago, and the trans worked fine then.
whats happening now is, with the engine running I step on the brake but the drive pulley keeps spinning, locking me out from putting it into any gear.

anybody know what I'm up against?
