JC 1965 1,528 #51 Posted February 12, 2016 You're right Bob. I hope it warms enough to melt the snow in the nest before any eggs are laid. I don't know if the eggs would hatch if they were laid in the nest with snow. What do you think ?
Ed Kennell 35,603 #52 Posted February 12, 2016 Snow and cold will not be a problem JC. These birds are equipped to hatch eggs in any weather. We are only days away from the first egg laid last year. http://www.wcvb.com/video/buzz60/nesting-bald-eagle-covered-in-snow-up-to-its-neck/31651038
rmaynard 14,864 #53 Posted February 12, 2016 They are re-lining the nest now to cover the snow. Momma must be getting anxious.

rmaynard 14,864 #64 Posted February 15, 2016 Those poor eagles have had to reline the nest each time it snows. Last night there was another dusting, so this morning they were busy again with their work. I don't know if anyone else heard it, but there was a tractor or truck idling below the nest Saturday. Not long after that, the male came up with fresh straw. The farmer that owns the property must have dropped off a bale of straw under the tree for the eagles to use.
Ed Kennell 35,603 #65 Posted February 15, 2016 The forecast for tomorrow is 40 F with heavy rain. Maybe I'll take them an umbrella.
Ed Kennell 35,603 #66 Posted February 15, 2016 Still no egg, and the nest is covered with snow again. I'm afraid if they bring up another load of stray, the nest will be so high, the eggs may roll out.
rmaynard 14,864 #67 Posted February 15, 2016 When the rain comes, the snow between the layers will melt and the straw will settle a bit. They have also added a few more branches around the edges to raise the sides a little.
AMC RULES 36,941 #68 Posted February 16, 2016 I'm thinkin... if there's any fish in the nest today... it came from Gorton's.
rmaynard 14,864 #69 Posted February 16, 2016 Temps are supposed to be in the forty's today, and it's raining like a monsoon here. I'm about 20 miles away. The ice on the lake at Codorus should be melting. I expect to see a veritable fish market in that nest within the next week or so.
Ed Kennell 35,603 #70 Posted February 16, 2016 Truckloads of fresh fish are on the way. The Pa Fish Commission will start stocking the 3.8 million trout next week.
