Wheelhorsestory 210 #1 Posted December 5, 2015 Especially at Christmas time, I love to share great stories about Wheel Horse tractors as I feel it’s the "human" side of the hobby that makes it so much fun. This morning, I am thinking back to a special Christmas when I found a very special tractor. I believe it was Christmas Eve 1997. The day began the way it always does on Christmas Eve. As usual, I started my Christmas Eve day by going down to Bud’s fish market in Branford, CT, located right on Long Island Sound. In Italian families, Christmas Eve is celebrated with the Feast of the Seven Fishes. There are many thoughts for what the number "7" means. Seven is the most repeated number in the Bible. Some people believe that the number seven represents completion. When God completed the universe, He rested on the seventh day. It may also represent the seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church. Now, the traditional feast at the Martino house usually consists of baccala salad (Salted Cod), fried flounder, fried shrimp, fried clam strips, fried scallops, clams on the half shell, and spaghetti with seafood sauce. The sauce contains many seafood delights. At around 10:00 am, the kitchen smelled Heavenly and the aroma of seafood and fresh baked bread seemed like it could be smelled for miles. While the sauce was simmering (It usually does all day), I decided to call back a man who I spoke to months previous. He was the owner of a small Wheel Horse dealership in Mass. At the time we spoke, he told me that he had two old Wheel Horse tractors, but would never sell them. They were very special to him and he had them on display in his front window. He explained how they were sitting on an elevated platform that he had made for them about 30 years earlier. As he described the tractors, I knew that they had to be very old, as he said the engine was in between your legs. He referred to them as “Ball Burners”. Check out this post next Saturday for some more of the story.
