I'm looking for you wonderful folks here at to critic this new purchase.  Tell me what you think it may need or what possibilities there are for it.  I'm open to all suggestions and information.  It seems to be in good shape, and mostly complete.

I'm probably going to leave it as it is.  But the drive belt guard is all rust, and no paint.  What could I do with that?

Knock the rust down with a very light sanding...  

then give it an oil bath, while you look for one in better condition. 

You're going to  need a push button starter switch for the hole in the trans tunnel too. 

Not sure if this one is the same one for your application, but I'll send you the link.

I just noticed the rear tires. General Garden Tractor SS's. I remember that brand on our 64 604 when I was a kid.

Well to start with, working on the tractor to get it running nice.  Got some carburetor issues right now.  I think someone might have installed the tierods wrong?  The rod that holds the hitch on has been sawed off on both ends so I does and can't put a hitch on it. etc

Your tank stand is interesting.  I believe all 854s were key start only with no starter button (or hole).  Mine was that way when I bought it.  However, my tank stand had been ripped open around the gear shift lever, so I bought a '63 753 tank stand which had the extra starter hole. So, if your tank stand is original, I'm surprised that it has the extra starter hole.  Maybe your tractor is an early production model using the previous year tank stand?

Think maybe some one might have cut the hole the key switch is in now?  Seems odd the hole is in part of the decal.

My original, unrestored 854 has the empty push button holes with key start and is an early production 854 as per the serial # ....just saying

Great looking Tractor! 

 

Oh and as far as the rusty belt Guard.  Get some CLR and a scotchbrite pad, the CLR will take most of the rust away n probably get some of the factory paint, shining through

No, just regular Cole hersey key......Like a dummy, I have no pic of the key in the hole to show you.

That's definitely a dandy. The 854's used a key switch and not a push button. The key switch did bear the full starter current though so you'd need to get the appropriate one. The ones with the push button starter were undoubtedly installed because they didn't have the proper key switch to handle the current. They could have installed a solenoid. No harm done. The tie rods are on wrong. They must have connected them from the backside on the steering shaft plate. Should be from the front with the nut on the back. They should connect to the spindles from below with the nut on the top. All simple fixes though.
