Its fried, and that sounds great!!!:woohoo:
I'll start hunting for a vender that will ship parts.
Thank you is an understatement :) but don't know what else to say..........
this is something I've wanted to tackle for a while now.

:twocents-02cents:            Before you order parts you may have to pull it apart to see if both ends have bearings or one end has bushings.         :techie-ebay:  has several parts suppliers.

@Bert Why don't you take it to a NAPA auto parts store....If they can't help, I'm sure they can send you the right direction.

I would take it apart first. If the armature is cooked or beat up no sense in putting parts in it. find another one.

This Kohler service manual covers the starter/generator
http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/3450-engine-kohler-k-91-k141-k161-k181-k241-k301-k321-sm-1972-hrpdf/

Get a sheet of brown crocus cloth to polish the armature. It is similar to emery cloth and won't contaminate the commutator bars.

I went out to the building to see what I have to work with and somehow ended up working on the 520 :eusa-think:
Anyway I think both of my non charging tractors are ok for a gen rebuild cause they will both start and spin freely, just don't have any output power.

Have you tested the gen/starters and voltage regulators. If both of them will spin you may want to check regulators first.

If it will start the engine it will charge, what you need is a voltage regulator.

I believe the starter/gen have a start circuit and a charge circuit. If it starts it may not necessarily charge and visey versey.

that's what I was originally led to believe,
by the previous posts it seems otherwise
at the moment I don't know?

WHX??

Is your regulator the one that mount on top of the S/G? If so I believe they were a Bosch or Delco. Should be an ez find at an auto parts place. I did have a real handy download that maybe the one Hank is talking about for checking and adjusting the regulator. Can't find it now in this mess of a computer but I did download it from here. Will go look for it again.

So you have a generate field coil and a starter field coil. Hence it may start ok but not generate anything. I would take it to a local auto electric shop and have it checked.
