whfan74 2,015 #1 Posted October 1, 2015 Dad helped me out big time by running and grabbing this beauty for me. I have been unable to get away as preparation for the meet and greet is in full swing. I really don't want anymore, but when it is on your bucket list, you go for it. Looks to be in pretty good shape, minus the hole in the deck. I am really only going after the low production number models or ultra collectibles at this point. This will fit nicely in to the collection!

wh500special 2,053 #20 Posted October 2, 2015 very nice 520-8!! i wouldn't mind picking up one someday... Also it must be a PAIN to lift the 60inch if its on their lol. My 520-8 has the 60" deck...I can't lift it. And the latch that holds it in lifted position isn't up to the task either. It rides the ground full time. Ed Kennell 35,708 #21 Posted October 2, 2015 Couldn't you add some lift assist springs to carry some of the weight Steve?
c-series don 7,785 #22 Posted October 2, 2015 I have to wonder why they did not make that machine with an electric lift? I don't even think it was an option?
arrkerr 54 #23 Posted October 3, 2015 I have to wonder why they did not make that machine with an electric lift? I don't even think it was an option? I was thinking the exact same thing. I can see why it didn't sell, w/a heavy 60" deck you need some help - w/an electric that would have been my ideal tractor. I guess we just chalk that up to the same reason they never had a foot operator hydro. Hindsight is 20/20.
wh500special 2,053 #24 Posted October 3, 2015 I think you could put springs on there. Probably not too hard to do, but would take some thought. I bought a 417-8 strictly for its electric lift to put on the 520-8. Another one of those "someday" projects.
MalMac 1,328 #25 Posted October 3, 2015 They did not sell because the mind set of the consumer at that time was "Why would I want a manual when I can go and get a auto." With the down fall of the demand for garden tractors that started in the mid to late 80's, people were not looking for manuals. Even big farm equipment got away from manuals. Toro just could not sell enough of them to justify its existence. Those of us that know the toughness of the eight speed can appreciate it , but we are the few compared to the masses that's just was looking for something to mow their yard.
