A New Addition!

Well, today, I went to look at a 520H, I've always wanted a 500 series, since day one, and I finally found a decent one within price range for me!  It seems to be an early 520, with no foreward swept front axle, and has pre-toro decals.  It had 835.9 hours when I bought it.  The previous owner got it from his neighbor, apparently, and he had it for quite some time.  It came with a dozer blade, wheel weights, and chains, and something which I have no idea what it is, an extra front rim, and a parts manual (and he threw in a few kohler manuals because he said I'd use them before he did). The tractor runs like a top and the hydro works great, doesn't seem to smoke, doesn't have any leaks, and seems like it was at least semi-taken care of.  It did not come with a mower deck, and has not had one on it for quite some time.  It is also missing the PTO and tachamatic brackets, but those shouldn't be too hard to locate.

If anybody has a good idea on how to date the 520's, let me know, because the rear fender pan has been re-painted, and does not have any tags on it.  Maybe it can be done with the tags on the onan?

Does anyone know what the red thing I got was?  I think the PO just thought that it was red and assumed it was Wheel Horse related, but I have no clue what it is!

Looks to be a 88 or a 89 520. They are awesome tractors, had mine for 17 years and has 888 hours and runs like a champ! They are one of the best plowing tractors an never get stuck, even with just weights! Good luck! Nice score!!

I don't have the original owners manual sadly, the previous, previous owner had ordered the 100 page parts catalog though, and the only markings it has on it is this.  WP_20150614_08_37_32_Pro.thumb.jpg.41db6

Not really sure what those parts are, and I don't think I have a 520 HC.

Butttt, after looking at the owners manual, I do have the wider tires that the manual says go on the 520 HC, and it does look like the hood was re-painted and the stickers may have been changed.  Are there any visual differences between the 520H and the 520HC that I would be able to tell?  I appreciate any input you all have!

The red thing is a plow for a Troy-Bilt tiller with a few extra pieces attached.

It looks like a 1988 520-H. The ignition key location was changed for 1989 to left of the steering column. You will notice that the motion control lever slightly interferes with the ignition key.

The HC also has less gauges. The dash is different.

Maybe that is the dozer blade that I got with the tractor, You're so good with all these numbers Garry, You always chime in! Thank you!

Well, these settle it then, Not an HC, didn't think so, but figured it was worth asking.

I don't think you can count on gauges as any kind of proof of being a 520HC or not. I have seen many different ones. I am picking up my first 520HC and it has all the gauges but less warning lights. My original manual that came with my 520H shows the 520HC with all gauges but lacking the warning lights. However I have heard of some with less gauges. My friends 520-8 only has an amp /hour/ fuel gauges, which some with the 520HC claim that's all they come with.  I don't know if anyone will know an answer as to why but its all over the place it seems

The HC also has less gauges. The dash is different.
