linen beige 14 #4 Posted November 10, 2008 Keep 'em off the sidewalk though, and the driveway, and the garage floor,.... Looks like you'de have to take them off and remount them every time you used them. You probably wouldn't want to pull onto a trailer with them either. But they should do what they are designed for pretty well.

Craig Arndt 6 #9 Posted November 15, 2008 Not my cup of tea. I like the slow methodical approach of a core aerator and I like the plugs. Also core aerator holes stay open a little longer too, so if you do fertilizer they don't fill in as fast.
HarleyMan46929 0 #10 Posted November 17, 2008 These things look like they'd do an exceptional job as snow-chains. My father used to have a set of 'ice-creepers' to put on our boots when we had ice on the ground. This link kinda reminded me of those ice-creepers. Granted they would be a PITA to have to take off every time you wanted to go in the garage/shop with the tractor, but you wouldn't really need chains in the winter-time again, either! I don't know about some of you other fabricators out there, but I may try to fab me up a redneck set similar to these things, just with shorter spikes. In fact, you wouldn't really need the spikes, although short spikes would work okay, but 1/2" angle iron cut to width of rear tire, positioned so the point of the angle-iron was biting into the ice/snow, then weld chains on the ends to run around the inner & outer sidewalls of the tires would do nicely for traction in the winter-time. I think I have an idea for something to do while the kids are at school tomorrow!!!! Now, if I could just find that camera I bought my daughter for her birthday last March!!?? Wish me lots'a'luck finding that camera!! Lord only knows where an 11 y.o. girl has hidden it!!!
bk-scouter 93 #11 Posted November 17, 2008 Looks cool, but watch out for those of you who have a buried invisible dog fence... I already learned learned that one last spring with a plug aerator.. :imstupid: -BK

Butch 194 #13 Posted November 17, 2008 You aerate your lawn because your soil is compacted and water and nutrients can't get down to the roots. Spikes only compact the soil more. Sure there are holes for the water but they close up pretty quick. You wanna pull plugs for better aeration. It allows clippings or other decaying matter to enter the holes to soften up the soil. You can use the plugs to fill in low spaces. If you do nothing with the plugs they will break down and be gone in 2 weeks. You're better off buying the plugging aerator you tow behind your tractor. They are a couple hundred bucks and easier to hook up. Golf courses don't use spike machines on their greens and tee-boxes. They use pluggers. :hide:
