scotty 252 #1 Posted May 25, 2015 My 1989 414-8 i just bought will only start with a shot of gas in the air cleaner. But runs great and starts great for the rest of the day after. What would cause this?
skrusins 128 #2 Posted May 25, 2015 Fuel going back to the tank. When you give a shot of gas it is like priming it. Sometimes if you shut the gas valve offat the tank it keeps the gas in the line. Just open valve the next time you use it and see if that works.
boovuc 1,090 #3 Posted May 25, 2015 Scotty,Don't be surprised if shutting the fuel off at the tank doesn't work. If that valve leaks a little, it will still drain back and cause your starting problem. If your valve works well, it will fix it. Mine leaks slowly on the C-175 so I installed an "upper" inline shut off and that solved the problems. If you don't run them much, this happens and it also leaves behind deposits so it's best to keep the carb/fuel pump/lines wet and especially if they are not used much! BESTDOGEVER 215 #7 Posted May 25, 2015 Sometimes the fuel pump gets a little dried out and needs help getting primed a little trick I picked up is to take an old fashioned squirt type oil can and shoot a little bit of oil in the fuel pump from the out port it rehydrates the diaphragm and works for a fairly long time.
