420 LSE mutt

So I have to start by saying this is a complete debacle of a tractor, and if any of the purists out there hate the sight 3 or more tractors melded into one, look away now. This thing is rough, and I want to just fix it enough to use it right now. So I bought a 520 front end. This is going to be a snow machine, so I wanted the gear reduction steering to handle the 2 stage. Everything else is basic maintenance aside from the rear axle seals, and a little wiring. Gonna try to use this guy in conjunction with the 48" dozer blade to try and top coat and spread some loam once it's running.

The front end went in extremely easy. The frame was already drilled in 4 spots, and everything lines up nice. Put in new bearings and races on the wheels. Thanks again shuboxlover!

Found the wrong spring in the break assembly as well. I know I found some other folks on the site with a very similar issue while do some searching. Make sure you have the correct spring. If anyone wants a comparison pic, please let me know.

Whelp, thanks for reading.

You will like that steering. Great start on your project and thanks for sharing. So,this is a 420 LSE that you are modifying ? Really, it's your tractor so however you want to build it is up to you. I'm sure this is going to look and perform great when you are done!

I have been following along your 420 find/repair and I think that this is an excellent way to go.

To repair or replace all the chrome that was destroyed or missing would have cost thousands of dollars, and still not have been "original" so why not make the best you can of what you had!

I for one am glad to see a 420 worker. Many of the others are too nice to work and since they are collectable many never will. You get the best of both worlds, a M20 engine on a tractor you can work. :handgestures-thumbupright:

Keep this thread updated as you go, I am really looking forward to it. And PLEASE post a video of your M20 machine when you are done.

And if you ever feel the need to do give up and do an engine swap, put me on the list to take your M20. That's an engine worth putting a full rebuild on! :eusa-whistle:

Thanks for all the words of encouragement! I really would like to give this baby some paint at least, but I want to ensure there are no mechanical/functional issues at hand. Best way to do that Is put it to work! Long range plan definitely calls for paint. The rust issue in some areas is bad. I want to try to POR 15 a lot of the parts. That stuff is great.

Got the motion control all cleaned up with new ball joints and a cam plate. Feels way better. Have to get the motor mounted and running to adjust it in, but hopefully that's is as easy as it sounds. Re glued on the brake band liner and put the new spring in as well. Everything feels good there as well, so for the cost of the spring, very pleased. Hope to have the new ignition switch and motor in this weekend, and go from there. Had to replace the fan. The po had 10.5" wide turfs with chains on the back which hit on the fan. No good. Went for 23 by 8.5 ags for the back. Hopefully that helps with the clearance issue.

So I thinks I have a 520 wheel and sheet metal, as well as a front end now. Haha. Should have just gotten a 520!

As far as the motor goes, I am eventually gonna pull the heads and have a look, but for now, there is no signs of smoke or rough running. Oil filter plugs and air filter will have to do for now. I will post a cold start and run vid when it's back together. I swear it starts faster than any small motor I have ever dealt with. Has a lot of power too! Ran the 2 stage like a champ, even without a clutch plate! I will post up some pics of that once I pull it off again. The clutch plate is gone and it's metal to metal. It looks like the fasteners are still there, so that is good, but the pto pulley looks a little rough inside and out. Might try to find a lathe to clean it up on and replace the bearings/clutch. That will be a fall project. Won't need it until the blower gets remounted.

Well, thanks for checking out my overhaul, and suggestions/opinions/advice are appreciated. This site has given me more than a few slick tricks for these tractors. Thanks guys!

Got the whole thing back together, and I am very happy with the performance of the kohler m20. I am impressed with the smoothness and ease of starting. I'll try to get a video up today. No smoke, and sounds good, but I would not mind one of the gurus Around here having a listen. Other than that, it is all set to be a worker for a couple years anyway.

I pulled the oil drain tube and put some pipe dope on the fittings. There seemed to be a decent oil leake from to this area.

Starter got a good cleaning, some paint, and some fancy Kohler bendix lube, which happened to look very similar to lithium grease. I was having some issues with it engaging, but the cleaning and lube fixed her right up.

I did notice on the hydro control that the cam plate was sticking in reverse sometimes. I had checked for all the possible symptoms you guys suggest, and here is no cracked frame, neutral adjustment is ok, plated and related pieces are clean. My question is two folded: Would a worn cam washer be the culprit, and is there another point that could be binding.

Thats looking good!

When you say worn cam washer are you referring to the follower? I would replace the follower (the off-center bolt that rides the cam) at the same time as the cam if you haven't (if i recall, there was a bit of sticker shock to that part). Also put a little lube on the follower, but just not on the friction washer. There may be some wear-in time to get the new cam plate feeling totally smooth.

On my C-165 (similar, may not be the same) there is a metal tab that helps "click" the motion control lever into neutral. Mine was bent and it was causing it to "hang up" in its travel going one direction. Maybe check there?

Also check into Matt's hydro foot control pedal. I have one but its not installed yet, but MANY people on here swear by them for the hydro control.
