305 380 #26 Posted April 30, 2015 wow...that brings back memories.... that was built by my families business back in the 60's. i may have even worked on it. i have dug MANY holes with one, they actually worked pretty good after you got used to it. i see you have the trailer too , kinda spooky driving it up isn't it? they are right , it is no longer supported, but i believe they still have one at the factory. there was a supply of parts for them , but i think they all got scrapped when they moved 10-15 years ago i'm no longer associated with the business , and they are alive and doing well according to my brother
wallfish 15,919 #27 Posted April 30, 2015 That's awsome. Any info you can provide would be great. Couldn't find any info on the net and no one ever returned my quest for information from General. Yeah, takes a little gettin used to driving up on the trailer!
wallfish 15,919 #28 Posted April 30, 2015 Hey 305, how about this old General model 10 ice auger from the 60s. I also collect Ohlsson & Rice powered tools. This is one of the more rare items and doesn't seem to be many still around.

I would buy them Do you know when the Dig R Mobiles were built? Any idea of working hydraulic pressure? Things like that?

wallfish 15,919 #35 Posted May 9, 2015 Had some issues with the machine. The auger carriage would wobble enough in the channel to enlarge the hole so much that the dirt would just fall back into the hole. I had to remove the large channel which the auger carriage rides up and down in to get it back into shape. The sides were bowed out and the front edges were also bent out. Got that straightened and then found a blown bearing for the shaft which drives the auger. The bearing was toast and then found the shaft is cracked all along the keyway. Thought about grinding a V into the crack and welding it but decided to have a machinist make a completely new shaft. That thing takes quite the beating so a new shaft should hold up much better. Think I'll also weld some angle onto the sides of the channel to beef it up some.
wallfish 15,919 #36 Posted May 18, 2015 A friend of mine who is a retired machinist and has a nice shop full of tools and machines was able to make me a new shaft. Got it all installed with new bearings but I was covered in hydraulic oil so hopefully it will get a test drive tomorrow
wallfish 15,919 #37 Posted May 25, 2015 Finally got around to giving the machine a GOOD test. The auger bits were worn and had a taper down to the drill point so I cut off both ends, swapped them around and added a cutting edge. The thing easily drills holes in normal dirt and pulls small rocks like these with no problems. First two holes went easy.BUT, these rocks were a big problem! Had to use the Backhoe to get them out. Sucks to have such a large hole for fence posts.Got most of it done but still have one more hole to do today, install 2 posts and 1 panel. Hopefully no boulders in it. wallfish 15,919 #40 Posted May 25, 2015 Rocks are nice and all that but aren't ya gonna show us a picture of one of your holes?? (I hated saying that!!) ....but someone had to!Mike........... Now I'm curious what you had to edit out Mike! I don't know about you sometimes You can see the holes in the pic, there just filled with fence posts If ya really want to test that, I have to dig new holes for my deck! (I don't need to see your holes though). I don't know about NY code but I had to bury those huge plastic mold footing thingys and sona tubes. Needed a real backhoe for those since they needed to be buried 4ft. Footing things were about 2 1/2 ft square. Are you sure about the holes? I can have the wife take some low angle pics!
