callum12 256 #1 Posted April 8, 2015 Hi all, I'm considering starting a project but in order to do so i would need to find a heavy duty preferably cast iron doesn't have to be though, 90 degree angle drive. ideally it would need to have a keyed shaft on either end, an easy way to mount it and have no gear reduction. the problem is I can't seem to find anything, what is the proper name for such a thing? where can i find one? (new or old). they must make them?? thank you very much, Callum
meadowfield 2,545 #2 Posted April 8, 2015 Look up the gearbox from a topper or rotavator. They are usually called right angle drives
Anglo Traction 759 #3 Posted April 8, 2015 Depends what it's for. Worth being sure a unit is suitable for your needs, loads upon it etc. have a look at this link to get an idea - http://www.techdrives.co.uk/spiral-bevel-gearboxes.html I found this just by googling - 90 degree drive coupling uk
953 nut 51,506 #4 Posted April 8, 2015 I don't know if you have any Grainger stores in the UK. They are a large hardware and power transmission supply company, another would be McMaster-Carr, they both carry the type gearbox you need. Another thing you might try is used equipment outlets, my Haban mower has a right angle, 90 degree, 1 : 1 box on it, might find what you need. Good luck, and we can't wait to see what you are building.
meadowfield 2,545 #5 Posted April 9, 2015 they are expensive new... the angle drives from rotovators come up on that site quite a lot

19richie66 16,879 #8 Posted April 9, 2015 Toro groundsmasters use a right angle gearbox for the deck. I believe it is 1" keyed shafts on both ends and it is a 1:1 ratio. They hold up well from what I have seen here at work. Not sure how rare they are over there.
callum12 256 #9 Posted April 9, 2015 i'll have a look at those toro deck gearboxes, after some working out I reckon it will have to take 22NM of torque minimum. the higher rated the better though. i'm still thinking about this project, it will be very involved! many thanks again, callum
Stigian 1,234 #10 Posted April 26, 2015 So what ya building then Callum?
callum12 256 #11 Posted April 28, 2015 well, I was thinking about uni-driving my A-800 as part of project agri-800, with the angle drive it would mean i wouldn't have to alter the clutch system. I have since found the peerless 820 transaxle which is top load and would be almost a direct replacement. only problem is finding one of sale! callum
meadowfield 2,545 #12 Posted April 29, 2015 just twist the belt... easiest way to get 90 degrees. I did that on project C4 for the front axle drive...
