5XI FRONT DUST COVER REMOVAL HELP

Recommended Posts

grinchsr

I am doing a complete service on a recently purchased 520xi and wanted to service the front wheel bearings but I can't seem to get the dust covers ( hub caps ) off.  I was beat by a hub cap how humbling that is.  Is there a secret to getting these things off without cracking them?  I had pry bars on both sides of it trying to pop it off with no luck.   I could take the machine apart and put it together again but I cannot get the caps off.  :angry-banghead:  :angry-banghead:

They just pop off. The plastic is pretty sturdy and you need to get behind it. It pops over the 95-4060 washer.

try using a heat gun or a hair dryer to make them more pliable

THANKS for the tips. I guess I was not aggressive enough with the pry bar because I did not want to break it. A heat gun will help.

I just carefully use the claw of a hammer and make sure that I'm just on the plastic. We're probably a bit warmer down here.
