Auction tractors

These two were for sale at a local auction this week.

No history was available for either tractor.

The RJ58 did not run, was redone with  rattle cans, hood was wrinkled, good snow plow, new rear ags,  engine was not froze and felt like it had good compression.

The B-100 was all original paint with new decals,  a perfect  deck with original paint and decals, it  ran and sounded perfect.

The RJ sold for $325,  Of course I don't know how high I would have had to go to get it.

The B-100 I really wanted and stopped at $650.   The auctioneer then said let it sit, he had a reserve that he never disclosed.

So I came home with nothing in my mirror.

OK, how bad did I goof up ? :hide:  :confusion-shrug:  :text-imsorry:

I don't think you goofed up I think 650 was more than a fair price for the b-100 I don't know about the RJ

There only worth so much. Why pay over the top? Things like that ruin the hobby. Imho.

I wouldn't say you messed up either, but I would say those prices seemed somewhat reasonable. I do see the rj is listed on ebay now.

I think both prices were pretty reasonable, (even though we don't know what the final price was on the B-100) That B-100 looks real nice and it looks like it would clean up real well, the deck and the seat both look to be in mint shape. Deck is an easy 3 and the seat is an easy 200. Sometimes its the regular Joe Homeowner that sees the value in these things. Who knows, maybe there was a guy in the audience who was looking for a nice tractor to cut his grass and he has done some searching at the box stores, he knows that a grand won't get you Jack. He sees this B-100 and he sees all that heavy cast iron... He knows it will last much longer than all the crap he has looked at at the local Big Box stores. Yup, I could see someone out there paying quite a bit more than 650 for that B-100. The collectors don't get all of them... I would have handed over 325 for that RJ in a heart beat..

I agree. slammer.     The problem was, I really wanted the B, but the RJ was sold first and I left it go at 325 thinking I will get the B for about the same bid.  Then after bidding it up to 650, I find the owner has a higher reserve on it and would not sell it.    Now I'm kikin myself for not running the RJ up a couple bucks more, but It may have gone up to 600+ also....I'll never know.

does the RJ have a price on it Jake?

Yeah, I feel OK with my bid on the B...650 was more than I wanted to pay,  But I should have run the RJ up higher.

Hahahaha, I emailed him and told him I'd give him the $325 he paid plus auctioneers fees. Lol

It really helps when I can see a photo of the tractor and also hear the price it sells for (and location is a major factor).

In posts here –– so often someone buys a tractor and describes the great deal they got; –– but it's hard to "visualize" without a photo(s) or hopefully hearing the actual price they paid.

Like with Ecknnell's post; to me, that RJ58 looks like it was a really great deal, and now I'm beginning to think my B's may be worth a lot more than I thought.

Appreciate the extra details, pictures and other's comments.   :)   :)   :)  Sure helps me understand these tractors.

There were no auction fees  for the buyer....just 6% Pa sales tax.

The seller pays 35% to the auctioneer though.

:text-goodpost: That is a very nice RJ, my guess is that I will have more than $350 in mine when I restore it, but I will have the satisfaction of a job well done and the pride of ownership that comes with it.

Looking at the ebay listing and the other things they are trying to sell I can tell that they just buy things they figure they can make a buck on.  :twocents-twocents:

I see that it was re-listed on eBay at a $ 499 starting price and has two bids already.

Standing there at the auction...

I too would've been all over that RJ for the original $325.

Yeah, I know I should have run the RJ up a couple more bucks.  But I'm guessing the buyer would have gone up to 600.  He listed it on Ebay the next day for 699.  Although apparently he didn't get any bids if he relisted it at 499.

He did. bid the B-100 up to 600.

I have talked to the auctioneer after the sale and the seller actually had a reserve of 400 on the RJ and 700 on the B-100.  He was on the phone with the auctioneer during the sale and let the RJ go @325 but would not sell the B @ 650.  Go figger ?  May be he knew what  the problems were with the RJ.

BTW, the seller pays 35% to the auctioneer, so he ended up with ~ 200 for his RJ.
