VinsRJ 721 #6 Posted January 27, 2015 The wire spring should ride on the sheet metal flang which is screwed to the gear case cover, not the paw body. Over the course of time those flanges may have curled over or wore out to a point where the spring just slips off. You may be able to drive without a noticable issue but you will not be posi locked (only one wheel drive) when driving straight if the spring is not riding correctly on the flange.
