What does it take?

Recommended Posts

formariz

My intent here is not to make myself a nuisance nor to show preferential treatment to certain members's posts. However  sometime ago I suggested that certain instructional videos by a few members be placed here all together on this forum for everyone to have knowledge of them and easy access. That suggestion got moved to the site suggestions and updates where it seems that it is conveniently forgotten since most don't visit there often. Granted that those videos are not as "glamorous" or as interesting to most as general conversation regarding wheelhorses, such as how many tractors we have, what tractor came home today.... and so on and on. Nevertheless we have here something of value to all of those who care and are interested in the preservation of wheelhorses, that should be apreciated and shared by all concerned.

So, there, like the title to this post says, what does it take to get this acomplished? Its not possible? Its not approved? Am i off base here? I am not going about this the right way? If so please someone enlighten me. At the very least someone with authority here give me an answer.

I think the consensus is that it makes sense to have those videos on our site. I am not sure if we need to create another section specifically for this reason. You (or anyone else) can start a topic about each of the videos and then post a link to the video. When a member uses the search function they will find it. Pretty simple imo. If the other mods/admin have other suggestions please chime in.

Steve I think he is simply stating that they should maybe pinned in a help forum. I think that would work much better then the search method because a lot of people potentially helped might not know to search for them specifically or might have issues wording a search to come up with the appropriate results. The search function is a finicky animal anyway. It would also be easier on people who aren't as computer literate. Not everyone that plays with these vintage machines is as good on the PC as the WH.

Perhaps a sticky with video links in it?

It would be real nice to have a button at the top labeled "videos". And not all videos, just the instructional videos, maybe approved by a mod or something? just a thought.

Videos should be on the how- to instructional video section. They should however be locked to replies so they do not detract or distract from them. Only post originator should be allowed to edit or add to it. Search feature is inconsistent, time consuming, and frustrating. What could be simpler than if one has for  example a RJ-35 and needs to work on it. Go to the instructional video section and there it is. All you need and more.

There are so many members here with so much talent  and more importantly willing to share their talent that I believe that if this is done properly, we would see a wealth of information on that section. Now what ever we have is just scattered all over forum, many times forgotten or drowned by needless chatter. Not a good incentive or a showing of the proper appreciaton to those members.

What would be the difficulty in changing the How-to video section to allow this? At the same time what would be the reason why this cannot be done?

We could even have a qualified dedicated moderator such as we have for the files section.

I am sure that this is a substantial amount of work, however members who have made videos in question also went though a considerable amount of work and time spent in order to share their knowledge and experience with the rest of us. Isn't that after all the whole purpose of this forum?

Search method sucks. I'm a poor searcher when it comes to looking for something.

Why is it that I cannot get an answer from site administration on this? Yes, no, not interested, not a good idea, you are crazy or what ever.

Maybe PM some of the Mods.,or Nylon. I think it's a great idea and is right along the lines of the way things are done on this site,so it should fit right in. I do know that everyone gets busy with "real life" too, though.

I concur. The Corvette Forum has an FAQ sticky that has all the technical posts. It's pretty awesome to have everything in one place

The first reply to your post was from a moderator, which I thought was site administration, but perhaps I am mistaken?

As to searching the Forum...I'd like to think that I am a Google "power user" and fairly adept at finding obscure things I'm looking for, but searching on RS usually leaves me feeling like a complete idiot, especially when I'm searching for a thread or topic I already know is there because I read it a year or two ago!

All that I am asking is that videos be allowed to be placed in the how-to video section, but to restrict replying to such post. Allow only post owner to edit or add to it. This way post is intact without any distractions. When replies are allowed to such a post before one knows it it is "drowned" with all kinds of of stuff which in my opinion also "confuses" the search engine.

I am also personnally guilty of replying to certain posts with material that has nothing to do with post's subject. The videos that I am referring to at this point mainly from Vin and Steve are just too important to allow that to happen. I also know for a fact that there are other members extremely qualified in other areas who's advice many of us value, that would contribute to such a forum if only their post would be "locked".

How hard can this be to acomplish? Why not take a vote on it?

I used to post a significant amount of help articles and quite frankly I have stopped because of what Cas is describing. Many folks can confirm I have taken to "private sessions", a great help to the problem owner but unfortunately not visible or of any benefit to other forum members. I chose to work with issues this way to prevent confusion on the part of those less experienced with electrical work, Too many cooks in the kitchen gets  confusing and sometimes contradictory posts end up taking the owner temporarily off track.

Before anyone cries out electrical elitism, I am not claiming others inputs are incorrect, just opening up too many options for the owner to follow. If another forum member offers what amounts to "drive by" advice, makes one post with no explanation of why or how the owner should perform their suggested action, the owner ends up being further confused. The "drive by" adviser somehow is never heard from again. The next contributor, has to spend additional time and effort to either "un-explain" the "drive - by's" suggestion or possibly be forced to comment on the validity of the post to prevent the session from going off track.

The value of having a locked (even pinned) help tutorial is obvious. Most folks who take the hours - yeah HOURS - of their own time to create these posts and videos usually have a handle on best practices needed to resolve a specific issue. Having a locked post allows the owner of the problem a direct one stop shopping experience to resolve their issue.

I believe if someone takes the HOURS needed to create a detailed tutorial for the benefit of all members of the forum, mods should be able to invest MINUTES to lock the post.

Sorry if any of this is harsh, but it is why I don't post tutorials anymore.
