Idle Question

Recommended Posts

KyBlue

The Kohler on my B.. it wont idle down most of the time. It starts okay at a lower idle, but once you throttle up it tends to want to stay there.

Any suggestions? carb? Governor?

Sorry the somewhat stupid question!

I'm new but from reading the tecumseh manuals I'd say check linkage, if not that Id mess with the idle screw up/down in 1/8th turns and see what happens.Could it be running lean at low speed?

It's very likely the throttle shaft/bore is worn and it is lean.

What Mike said, or some sort of air leak. Check the gaskets around the carb.

Those are new. Replaced them back earlier this spring, did it before and after new gaskets. Both Surfaces are flat (checked with straight edge)

Hate to hear it might be a worn shaft!

Every now and again my 14hp Kohler decides it doesnt want to idle (runs fine above idle). I remove the idle mixture adjusting screw and spray a shot of carb clean throught the orifice, and refit and adjust the screw. Seems to fix it for another 3 or 4 months, one day I'll take the trouble to clean and fit a kit to the carb.

Or how freely is the throttle shaft turning? I have a Tec HS 60 that wants to throttle up and not throttle down. Had a corroded carb.

Kohler sells kits to replace the shafts and bushings to take the slop out of worn holes. If you can't find the right parts, PM me. I may be able to put my model making skills back to work and fashion something from brass stock.

I'd double check all my linkages and carb settings before I pulled it apart though. Can you see any slop/slack in the throttle shaft? Does the shaft bore look out of round?

Ill have to do a bit of tinkering and check the play/slop in the shaft, look and see what condition its in. Maybe adjust a bit... dont want to do to much cause this thing runs so good...i hate to jinx it!

It does'nt fix the problem but can you get some kind rubber fitting over the shaft to help seal the leaking?
